Can I run a 41p clutch, with 40 chain? Saw that clutch at tractor supply, figured it would work but wanted to be sure before buying
Thanks in advance

It is my understanding, that the 4 in 40 and 41 is the pitch. It means 4 eighths between links. So they are interchangable. I think the 41 is just a tad wider than 40, So it is stronger.
Please wait for a sencond opinion before spending any money on my advice.

The pitch is the same on both. 1/2". But the distance between the inner plates is 1/4" on 41 chain, and 5/16" on 40 chain. I was concerned there may be too much play running 40 chain on a 41p clutch

Yes the #40 and #41 chain are the same chain essentially... however, the #40 is a wider width link (side to side... not link to link). So a #40 chain, will 'fit' a #41 tooth gear/sprocket... BUT, due to the width, a #41 chain wont fit a #40 tooth gear/sprocket.

It 'IS' recommended however, to get the proper chain for the proper tooth gear/sprocket... but asfar as 'will it work?"... yes... if you are running a #40 chain on a #41 tooth gear/sprocket... but not the other way around.

Normally, a #41 is recommended inplace of a #40, due to clearance... normally.

keep in mind that #41 is weaker than #35 yard chain (tensile strength that is)
so #35 or #40..

as being said.. running a #40 chain on a #41 sprocket is not a problem at all;
the play isn't too big of an issue; the important part is the roller diameter here..
and that's identical on all three (main) contenders (5/16") [#40, #41 as well as 420] :D
So you can run all three on the narrowest (#41) sprocket.
(it's just slightly noisier)

Yeah hehe that was misleading..

the three 4* main contenders (40, 41 and 420) of course!
cleared that up a bit :D

#35 rollers are smaller too so not even that would fit ;)

Yepp, after your post I saw that..
it was obvious to me since we talked about 1/2" pitch...
but then I recognized I never mentioned 420 but I did #35 when talking about the lack of tensile strength of the #41... (still strong enough for a small kart.. but it's common misbelief that it's 'stronger' than #35.. which it's NOT!)
...I think the 41 is just a tad wider than 40, So it is stronger....
Neither is the case in fact it's the weakest available chain suitable for go karts.
(not counting #25 used on some low power electric motors and a handfull of mini bikes)

Anywhoo, misleading removed, previous post should now be clear :D
