Hey guys. I have a project idea and want to see if I can use a 40 series TAV with a longer symmetrical belt to turn the output of my vertical shaft v twin so that it will deliver power to a horizontal shaft. In other words, the TAV drive belt will be making a 1/4 turn one way from driver to driven, then a 1/4 turn back the other way from driven to driver.

There will be additional gearing through a #40 chain if the drive belt can take the torture twisting.

Anyone attempted this ?

Are you talking about transferring power from a horizontal clutch to a vertical orientated clutch or pully ? My guess would be that you might have a hard time keeping the belt from jumping off, and if not, it might not last a good long time.
But you know what, give it a try. Might just work. I'm certain that I don't know. Like you said in your post, longer is probably better. The farther apart they are seems like the easier it would be on the belt.

I tried it before with a single quarter turn. It would knock the belt off when the driver would start closing.

-But now Im wondering if that second, quarter turn (oriented the correct way when it loops back) would have any effect on keeping the belt in place.

Either way, it wont work for more than a couple minutes before it tears up the belt. -Like Denny said.

Some other options I considered:
I had researched using a Rotary Cutter to make the 90 degree turn thinking that might be a reasonable solution, but nobody seems to like them.
Anyone do a Vertical to Horizontal conversion on the engine ?
I didnt really want to expand the project by opening up the engine....
I see folks have successfully re-routed the oil pickup or modified the sump area to go V>H, but I dont know or trust YT like I trust the folks here.
That will not work! The belt is too thick and inflexible. Not to mention not designed to work that way.
Was planning to use a longer belt, but it seems the moving pulleys will throw it eventually. Thanks

You will be better off investing in a horizontal shaft engine.

How dare you! :furious2: Here, we make do. :cornut:

The best use for a vertical engine is to connect it to a vertical shaft hydrostatic trans.
But ya won’t be going anywhere fast!

Isn’t that the setup for all mid grade riding mowers? How do those mud mower or racing mower guys make ‘em go so fast then?

Maybe they de-governorize em…

Yeah every homodepot ridem mower has a similar setup.
Mud mowers? I hate mud, so l have no idea.
That stuff gets everywhere then dries and has to be chiseled off.
I was raised on desert moon dust, Thats as fine a compound as you can find.
It acts like a fine polishing compound.
It absorbs oil and other fluids and acts like stop leak. There are many other benifits as well.
Far superior to mud!
