40 series installation questions

Just received this 40 series set up from amazon and I have been trying to research mounting and installation since there are no instructions. I know the mounting distance is 9 3/4” and I already have jackshaft for mounting the driveN but that’s it. The picture shows the spring facing out like driven but I’ve read on here red spring mounts inward.

2 questions I have are:

1) Which way does the driveN mount? Spring in (to motor) or spring out (away from motor)?

2) What do I put between the engine side cover and the back of the driveR? I can’t find this anywhere but in my head it seems that I should have something between them for spacing and/or to keep the driveR off the side case of engine.

I’ve included pictures of the unit to help for visuals. Anything you guys can help with would be awesome. Thanks in advanced!!

Driven Unit Mounts with the spring inboard (towards the engine).
There is a reverse wound spring available if you need to mount the driven unit in the other direction (spring outboard - away from the engine). If you use the reserve wound spring and flip the driven unit, you should let the driven unit float on the jackshaft - so it can slide along the jackshaft. I dunno, maybe needs to be able to move 1" in order to keep alignment when the CVT shifts. Since that doesn't apply to you, ignore it everything beyond the first sentence - or tuck it away for later.

2.)
Use 1" washers on the crankshaft for spacers/alignment if needed.
3 or 4 washers isn't uncommon.

Thank you much for the quick and detailed response! I had seen most info for the red spring to be mounted inward but the picture from the product made me second guess. Also. Thanks for the info on the washers as spacers!!

If you don't use a shaft collar between the driver and the side of the engine, when you torque the bolt on the end of the crankshaft that holds the driver on, you washers will eventually wear out the oil seal on the side of the engine. This happened to me on a old Tecumseh that did not have a step up shaft. In less than 10 minutes my driver pushed up against the side of the engine and nearly ate through the side of it. The only time you use washers on the inside of the driver for spacing is when your crankshaft has a step up. I am assuming yours does not, thus your question. Two piece shaft collars hold more force than do one piece and are available from Amazon.

I haven’t looked closely enough at the engine now that I think about it to knownif it has a step on the crank shaft or not. It’s a Honda gx390. I’ll take a look tomorrow. Otherwise I found some shaft collars on amazon that would be what I needed. Thanks for the info!!

Here’s the shaft on my 420cc.
It’s a Powerland Brand (if that matters).
Stepped shaft keeps the driver unit off the oil seal/side cover.

Looked today and I do in fact have a stepped crank. Shouldn’t have an issue with spacing it out since I have to add a jack shaft in. I can align the jackshaft to make it all work.
