3hp Briggs Stuck Valve.

Have a 3hp Biggs I salvaged off a edger that was sitting behind someone's garage for who knows how long. Air filter was missing so rain got into the carb and the intake. Rest of the motor survived the years of abuse, but I have the entire motor disassembled, but the intake valve is frozen solid. With motor on its side I filled the intake port with PB Blaster and let it soak for over a week now. I applied some pressure with a flat head on the bottom of the valve and nothing. Any other tricks I should try? I know the valve is a lost cause but don't want to damage the block. Thanks, Adam!

Well...

On a OHV I'd say.. get a new head... but I think you're talking about a flathead


It's most likely the valve shaft sticking..
you can try to remove the spring and retainer to help the process, but it's not really necessary...,
and then place a chisel unter the valve (the broader the better)
then tap it with a hammer (carefully, you don't want to break the aluminium case )

when the valve slightly opened, spray in more PB blaster and tap it back down again..

& repeat until valve is free

just to make sure it's not the plate sticking
wipe the valve clean and turn the engine upside down;
spray the valve from the intake port with pb blaster again..
and let it sit overnight first.

It is a flathead and the retainer is removed but spring is still there. Tried prying but will try the light tapping with a hammer. That was my main concern was damaging the aluminum block. Thanks Sid!

I've heard of people freeing stuck motors with a mix of 50% auto trans fluid and 50% acetone. I don't know how well that would work in a flatty.

Grizzly, just make sure to use a wide chisel..
sort of spreading the abuse over a larger area of aluminium edge
