a fellow user and i had a disagreement on tensioner placement awhile back. his take on it was that while tensioning from below seems like a good idea, the engine pulls the top of the belt, slacking the underside. the torque of the engine would tend to cause the tensioner to come unseated. not his words, but the gist of what i remember of the conversation. running the tensioner at the top made more sense, though i can't tell you why it did.

thanks mike, it seems like top and bottom have there pros and cons. but i already welded so i'll stick with the top, just trying to find a better tensioner still, i have school coming though=(

If it doesn't work and you have to reconfigure (should be easy with unistrut LOL I love the stuff!) Move the jackshaft forward and the engine behind. That will put your slack on the top side.

i gotta say porshe dude is correct, the tensioner must come up from the bottom of the belt as the power is trasmitted thought the top of the belt.
think about it every thing that uses a tenisioner pulley/ gear has the belt on the return side of the belt
