A properly geared system will have nothing to gain in top speed with a multi gear transmission. Lower quality motors and controllers however have much to gain in torque with multiple speeds. I have an RC rock crawler and the two speed gearbox makes a huge difference in climbing ability. There is also an older power wheels type jeep that had two speed gearboxes, it was called a hi-torque. So you are both correct and incorrect in the ways the others have pointed out...
