3 seat kids buggy which I can control

Hello everyone!

I am looking for something which I can build which would enable me to transport my 3 kids around when I go for walks.

Currently I push my 3 year old on this trike from mothercare which she loves.

As I also have twins aged just over a year it is impossible for me to push 3 of those trikes so I was wondering if there was some kind of buggy/trike thing that I could build which has a handle like the trike so I can control the power.

I have seen this which I could build 3 seats on & may do the trick.

The key requirements I have are:
- It should go no more that walking pace
- I must only be able to be powered by me via walking behind it
- It will need to be able to go over grass & along pavements (down & up kerbs) so I can go to the shops etc
- It would be great if there was a step of something so i could take a ride as well!

I am a confident DIY'er & love building things & would like to buy a kit. I do not have the tools to weld.

I would love to hear of any ideas anyone may have.

Three kid hauler for cheap..with no welding....Thats going to be a tough one. My thoughts? Barbie Jeep towing a wagon.
A Power wheels is pretty powerful and if you simply put a set of smaller diameter tires on it it will only go as fast as you want.
You could wite a remote switch to make it start/stop...
You could gut a rummage sale powerwheel and harvest the motors and mount them on a coaster wagon with the switch relocated on the handle. Every other idea I have requires spending a pile of cash or welding.

For safety I would have a handle to push. When the handle
has pressure against it a switch would close allowing power to the wheels. When you let go of the handle the unit would stop.

That motor kit is about one HP, I think that is more power than you need. I'm guessing you only want this to go walking
speed. I read the description it says "Easily move 400 Lbs (181 Kg) at top speed of 18 MPH" Walking speed is more like 3mph.
If you only want walking speed?? you could get by with a 300 or 400 watt motor.
Assuming 4MPH and a 32 inch dia wheel;
4MPH = 352FT/minute = 4224 inches/minute
So the wheel must rotate 132rpm.
The motor goes 2750rpm, divide this by 132 and you find you need a 21 to 1 sprocket ratio. Probably need to do that in two steps. Something like a 4 to1 and then a 5 to1 sprocket ratio.
I would gear it a little fast and the use the motor speed controller to get the speed right for walking.

You are going to have to jackshaft this thing...Otherwise you are going to end up with a sprocket thats bigger than your wheels to slow it down.

perhaps that example of the motor drive until was a little to much.

I have seen these on ebay http://shop.ebay.co.uk/611062974/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg= which look as though they could be adapted.

they look a little more suited.

the problem i have is that a garden gart is around £60, the motor drive unit if I were to buy the above typicall goes for around £60 again. theyn i need a 24v battery and charger at perhaps £80 if i am lucky. I'm thinking my project may end up costing too much, unless anyone has any other ideas.

That's what I have found, building electric costs more than gas.
I guess your looking at the wheel chair motor assy's, not a bad way to go, but you should try to get the speed controller.
I picked up a junked electric wheel chair out of someones trash, still trying to figure out what to do with it.

Hey James,
I'm not against electric, in fact I'm for it! I have an electric gokart, And have a great time with it. I'm in the middle of some changes to my motor mount at the moment, and then I'll be getting new batteries.
