Hard to tell, but those valve covers look a lot more like a 212 hemi than non-hemi.
Wondering if that hollow tube sticking out from behind that one valve cover is a breather for it that should be tubed into the carb or at least terminate with a catch filter.
Wonder if that 196 is a parts-matching clone of a Honda GX196, using all Honda-matching components.
The 223 reminds me of my Sturm-Ruger Mini-14 Ranch rifle. Those 223 rounds cost me a buck apiece. Could empty a 10 round clip of them in 3 seconds.

That's interesting. I just made a post about a Tillotson Wildcat 223 engine I bought for a project. It has a 2mm longer stroke - 58mm - to get the added displacement.
