So I thought the square tubing was going to be part of the frame and the round tube that is on bearings inside the square tube was going to be part of the steering frame and the shaft that rotates through the center was going to be part of the drive system.

Of course you could just mount a vertical engine dead center and have the shaft drop down the steering gooseneck to a right angle then sprocket to driven sprocket on wheel sort of like an outboard boat engine set up on a bumper boat and have a round handle that wraps the engine for steering although brakes and throttle would be an interesting configuration and still need some sort of clutch.

no you have it right i think. These plates will push on the race. And hold in place. And i should be able to tighten and losen if needed. Axle will have pully or gear and motor will be in front of steering and rider. To balance wieght.

Okay so I got a hole saw! And cut out my part with a nice hole. Then I made a duplicate for the other side.

Also I welded up some nuts inside as planned. I'm going to continue with the steering bearings being in backwards....ugh....oh well.

Think I got some slag or splatter up in one of the bolts.....really hard to get the bolt screwed into the nut. Almost impossible. May cut it out? or grab tap and re thread nut? Think ill try the tap first.

You should be able to clean up the threads nicely with a tap. I usually run a tap through nuts that I've welded, although I use tig, so no spatter.

FYI im so voting for you if this works. Lol I've always wanted one of them. Or wanted to get a old bumper car and use it as a go kart type vehicle.

put a little gel on your threads before welding seems to work pretty good

Tap seemed to clean them out. So im good to go. Next time ill have to try the gel? like welding nozzle gel? I also hear holding with a wood stick shoved in place or gel and bolt with tape on bolt threads... ill have to experiment.

Think im going to take a break tonight. Need to go pick up some more scrap metal before i continue. Maybe ill work this weekend if i have time.

Well no big updates today. Didn't have much time this weekend. Did manage to cut the square pipe i had left over in half. Going to use for frame around the steering and axle parts. Need to pick up some more metal before continuing.



My big concern now is the height from wheel to steering wheel. i need to be as low to ground as possible. which means steering wheel needs to be low. And stack up so far is about 3'8". i think was some minor adjustments to the design i can get it down to 2'6"

First i need to get a racing go kart tire or something similar in size. Like chancers tires he used on his 2016 winning kart look small enough.

Here are a couple sketches of the steering axle design so far. Wheel needs to go under with right angle diff and steering wheel needs to go on top....I need to order more parts before i weld anymore! So i can lay them out and see how they all fit together.



right angle diff may need to go on outside of steering forks and have small chain/pully connect to axle, as to shrink the overall height.

I really want to weld more but..ugh..anyways trying to move forward with this.

Okay i ordered a r3400 right angle diff. Can handle 7hp and up to 1750rpm. So i thnk i will gear down 4:1 first. Then 2:1 after gearbox. Giving me 8:1 overall.

Only thing is the diff is big! Didn't realize when i ordered. But now that I've looked at the size its 12x12.7x5" hmmm....going for a 10"-12" tire. This thing is going to be huge next to the tire..... Ugh.

oh my. This gearbox....is going to be the death of me. why cant small gearboxs handle high RPM and 6.5HP!!!!! maybe solid titanium?

This box will work. If i make things bigger...............

Wow that does sound bad now that I read it. Specially after I just said the x rated version. I would like a small and tight box that can take the power for this project

Worked on this a little. Cut the main chassis down a half inch. Then realized the bolts i have are not the same and if i cut the other side i would need to get more bolts.... Maybe i should Keep them all the same.

You know how you go to the local hardware store and they only have 5 bolts when you need 8.....so you get 4 one size and 4 another..... Well yeah. Thats what i got.

Anyways also updated my brackets to hold the bearing race. Need to update the other one now. Should help center them better.

Also the right angle diff came in. Wow it's huge..... Not sure about it. Think i wasted $99....I'll see what i can do once my wheel is in.
