2016 - Junk build the hard way

Okay moving over to this contest. 2016 build off.

yup. junk build.HF wheels, wheel chair parts, motorcycle parts, square pipe from old pool fence. $50 predator. keeping everything as cheap as possible. Even have 2 lawnmowers and a edger i picked up for free. but i think now i will sell most to pay for some good parts or needed parts like an axle.

well here we go. Making some progress already so fist pic shows current stage. may be down a day though. grabbed hot metal with thumb!!! 1st degree burns. should be better tomorrow. next time both hands with gloves its just hard to weld with cheap glove on. pulling trigger and all. so no glove welding thus far, at least on that hand. maybe i need to deal with hard to trigger issues and save my hands from burning.

EDIT: Well its almost complete. Needs paint. but it's running stopping turning. all requirements meet Added latest image to first post. Will replace as new updates happen.

Thumb is okay today
so back to work.

Almost finished seat. need to put in some support for the back. Attempting to make it adjustable some how. thinking rail on the chassis that it slides on and then have several bolt locations to mount. so it can adjust for other people ( wife, kid, maybe?)

i have left over vinyl i used on my patio bench that i can use for seat covers. Need to put fasteners in wood first....ran out of screws so i couldn't finish seat today.

Spent some time this morning putting seats together.

Here is the back rest. Used wood siding i found. Should be somewhat water proof wood. Although i used the inside part for the outside of the seat? oh well. maybe ill come back and paint it. Would of been better to paint first.....hindsight right

Picked up some t-nuts that can be hammered into the inside for mounting.

Used some old carpet padding doubled up for the padding, then stapled vinyl i had from last project. came out good for the back. screws come through a little. May need to put washers to keep from digging into back. but i couldn't feel them once assembled.

Okay second part of seat.

For the bottom of the seat i used old memory foam bedding. about 6" thick. Compressed it down while stapling it together. Came out okay. one side is not as compressed as the rest but it should be okay. sitting on it makes me think i should of used stiffer foam? but i'm a pretty big guy so should be okay for family if i survive maiden ride.

And here is the seat put together. Feeling like it should lean back a little bit in the seat area. the back is fine. just it feels a little small for me by a couple inches. And if it could have a 10 degree lean on it it would be perfect. But i will try it as is first and modify later.

Need to finish side padding and weld on right side holder for padding. Then maybe a support from side arms to back for support. wanted to get padding on before i continue supporting it.

I leaned back on it and felt sturdy. but when bumping around im worried. so side brackets are coming next.

And i need that beer holder somewhere on the chair i think. dont want to feel the pain when i crash. Maybe ice chest holder on the back?

Wait we have to complete with a school project thankfully i work in a manufacturing company, as an engineer . but maybe i could contact mech engineer to help. Maybe i add a some computer system/navigation/remote control maybe? hard to compete against everyone.

Wait I have to compete against a"Computer Game programmer"/ "website builder" who is also an "engineer at a manufacturing company" with access to a "mech engineer"

Sorry dude sounds like a pretty fair playing field to me. Although I can call in "Poboy for support" and that gives me all the Advantage!

I've never built a go kart before. First time welding in like 15 years. Not like I can program my computer to build it for me. But I do know a couple mech engineers if I need help. You know the types, with quads, buggies, dirt bikes always at the sand dunes or desert with campers. I hadn't even been on a bike in 15 years also.

As you can see 15+ year relationship. Can't do anything.

Not-a-bot did not have welding experience at all. let alone 15yrs ago. Did you read his thread. His "team" was couple girls that could not weld either.
Dude I don't want to try and run you off, you are welcome here and I look forward to seeing what you can build out of junk but going on another guys thread and crying 'Poor me' and he has 'a team' is not very cool.

HF wire was okay. It splatters a lot but the penetration is fine. I would like to try MGAW next to see how much better that is then flux core. My mom has a helium tank that she doesn't use so i may contact the supply store and see if i can swap it for an argon tank. Since she has a contract with them. Save me $100 tank price. Not sure what a fill up of argon cost. She is in Sacramento so in the long run probably cost $60 in gas to pick it up. (my truck gets best case 16-17 mpg freeway ) maybe i wait until i have to go up there.


I'm sure maiden voyage i will know if the welding is good or not. Maybe i should do some stress testing on some welds first....

Sorry no pics today. Phone was dead last night. Try to get some image to show progress tonight. I've attached reference images instead

Worked on the spindles some more. Added the connection arms at what i expect to be the angle to the center of the rear axle location. Used 1.5" square tube cut down to look like connection arm in attached image below.

Then i drilled out the inner diameter of the spindle so i could hammer in some nylon inserts. Using them as bushings. They ended up being a little tight to the 1/2" bolt that holds the spindle in place so i used a 1/2" drill bit to open up the nylon bushing. now they lock in place good and move nicely. Even with the added springs.

Next i have the front end steering parts from my daughters chevy s10. It has all sorts of good pars on it. going to take the grease fittings from that and insert onto spindles so i can fill them with grease. not sure how much better that will make them? But i have the parts and the grease gun so might as well add it.

edit: okay maybe i did take one pic before phone died. I know looks like junk. Once paint is on it will look...just as bad.

So after some deep thought :toetap05: i realized the kart was getting too long. so in order to make it short i had to cut out some frame up front where my feet can now move up and the pedals can be placed closer to the front. You can see before design image in previous post.

I've also attached some finished images of the spindles. I added Zerk fittings that i pulled from my cars old front end steering. couldn't get the exact drill bit and tap. so i drilled as close as i could possible get with what i had. And then spot welded them in place. I hope there are good enough to squeeze in some grease

Having a slight issue on one spindle not sliding on spring at all! so i need to take apart and find out what it is catching on.

I think i will also need to cut the bracket a little so i can turn sharper. or at least the same amount of freedom in both directions. no image shown of issue.

p.s. pay no attention to the welds.

HF wire sucks if you want to keep it looking decent at all. It splatter's everywhere. I was using some anti-splatter jelly, then I discovered the Lincoln wire barely splatter's at all.

Cool build! Do you have a powerplant yet?

Powerplant? hmm. i guess with electric, gas, steam? powerplant is the best word... not something i hear everyday. Anyways yes the engine!

Some guy on craigslist sold me this 6.5HP Predator 212cc for $50!! New in BOX.

I've been slacking on this. i've not fired it up yet. had it for a week now. I'll make time this weekend to put gas and oil in it and try it out. Cross my fingers.
