So seeing as there's talk on here of the OMB Mini Bike Build Off, I think it wouldn't be unreasonable to have such a build off on this forum.

I know this forum isn't as active as the OMB forum so it's doubtful there'd be as many entries, it would certainly be fun though.

Perhaps a 2 wheeled and 4wheeled class?

I'd say a similar time frame as the OMB one would be good, 1 month to "register" and then 2 months from there.

So, who would be genuinely interested in such a build off? I know I would.

Thanks

Hayden

I'm interested, although my project will take a bit longer than that.... :D. If enough people enter it would still be cool to see what other people enter!

I will be very interested to see the outcome! Natural gas would be cool to see on a kart. Best of luck!

I would be interested, only however, if we had more time... I do not have much funds for much... so getting some parts would be hard... :(

...got plenty of junk to fiddle with...

I may not be in a position to enter, but I'd like to see it.

The problem here is our limited active membership- so with every category, the number of potential entrants drops greatly. I might suggest a single category, with an extended build time- Like a budget build (under $200 for example) or a vintage restomod. Food for thought, anyhow. I like the OMB concept of posting a dated pic with a picture of the primary parts pile.

Might be doable...

Oh yeah I didn't think about that. What would we be graded on? Lol because I don't have a lot of money to make a nice kart, I was thinking more of a scrap build with the stuff that I have already.

Well, see- that's pretty much my perspective. This is DIY Go Karts, with an emphasis on ingenuity and creativity. Let's face it- folks with a huge motorsports budget are a lot more likely to just go out and buy an expensive new whatevermobile, rather than hang out here- building stuff and troubleshooting, piecing things together.

Well I couldnt do anything else right now with me building the 6x6 and it being my entry in OMB's contest.

I'd probably just enter it here as well if this contest gets off the ground.

If the contest was started early summer or later I'd come up with another vehicle.;)

Yeah like some of the postings on OMB are guys basically just buying a ton of new and expensive parts for their minibikes and then having some really cool things in the end.

Matter of fact, I think It should be based on threads. whoever joins can do whatever project they want. Wether it be a full scale build, or buying a ton of stuff and building it, scrap build, modifying an existing kart, or even just changing tires and paint. Anything. And then the person who has the best log of their work or the bes build thread with the most views (and its decided in a poll at the end as well), wins it.

Nothing like a deadline to speed up a project though! :D

can it include modification of an existing DIY frame? if so, IM IN!

Don't see why not. I think the OMB rule of no more than 50% built is pretty good, I would certainly include something along the lines of....

"Starting with something complete is okay, but you really have to modify the crap out of it." :roflol:

It's not like I'm making all the rules and setting them in

Awesome.

You should build one that runs on natural gas and enter it. :D

It doesn't have to start soon, it could start in a few months. That would give us poorer folk some time to collect some parts. :)

Yeah, the lack of active members is the biggest barrier for something like this.

I would suggest that if we just have a single category we should make it a "free for all". Just a what ever goes sort of thing. If it's a specific category then that limits the entrants. Eg if it was a restomod then I wouldn't be able to compete as old pre-built frames are super dooper uber rare in Aus (I could probably use the Scrap Kart V2, but I have other plans for that).

And yes, the picture with the written entry is a good idea. Seeing as it will probably be quite some time before this starts, to stop people from taking such a pic now I'l (or seeing as I will be an entrant, perhaps you could seeing as you've said it's unlikely you'l compete) make a random word that must be written in the picture entry (I hope that makes sense) and that word will be released when entries start. ;)

I figure at the end we'd have a poll to decide who has the awesomest creation.

Everyone qualifies! And Blue, you always have a million projects going so when ever we start it you'l surely have something you can enter! :arf: The modded rear engine mower would certainly be very cool and unique though!

Yeah, even if someone does spend heaps (of money, not time) to make it look nice that's not what gets my vote. I like to see ingenuity and clever design much more than chrome wheels and pleated vinyl seats.

If we do it soon then I'd have no problem with you running your 6x6 in it, very cool build indeed. And geez, it's halfway through summer now, I don't want to wait 'till the end of the year before we start! :p :D

Yeah, the OMB guys are pretty different to us though. This forum is predominantly (although, it has swayed from this over the years) about building your own stuff and clever design/engineering. Not many people on this forum have budgets at all, let alone what quite a lot of the OMB guys seem to spend on their stuff.

And yeah, it'd be great if we could get a separate section made up and put build threads and the rules in there, then have have a mega poll at the end to decide who wins. There's a limit of 10 options per poll though, that's where splitting it into categories would be good, assuming we have more than 10 entrants who finish their project of course.

It's only really worth making more than one category if is a clearly 2 different things being done, eg half the people are building minibikes and the other half are building karts. There's also scratch built vs modded factory built.

Yeah- that is a workable suggestion. Unless the deadline is far enough into the future, I can (and will) remain neutral.

I'll enter if I can submit my minitruck build. Its too bad even with motivation its probably going to take me a good year and a half to get it where I want it. :D

Were looking towards 2-1/2 to 3 months of winter here.

Although I do have a heated garage so its not impossible.

I cant afford to do another project right now and actually will have trouble getting the stuff I need for the 6X6 unles I can scavenge even more from the parts I have.

As cool as it is, I would think that one of the contest rules would somehow indicate a "small" vehicle. Just thinking out loud here...

Yeah, I was merely joking :arf:

But I have been thinking about starting another smaller project lately. I have a spare 400cc street bike engine waiting for a home! :devil2:
