Never had any problems whatsoever with any Tecumseh. An occasional clogged jet perhaps. An easy fix.
They don't like multi grade oils.
A properly tuned and adjusted Tecumseh will eek out an equivalent sized Briggs.
I avoid anything w/stepped shafts such as in the Tecumseh 2 cycle snow engines (and some chainsaws) . PITA to work with.
Straight shafts are far easier to utilize.

That Tecumseh 2 stroke caught my eye too!
I'm with Russ on the Tec vs B/S debate. I think B/S excelled because they perfected the Butt-Simple engineering that a typical utility engine requires. They're not always well cared for, frequently abused, and expected to always run after months of storage. A B/S, with almost it's entire fuel system contained inside the gas tank (genius!) is alot more forgiving to bad treatment. As Russ and a few others in threads (myself included) have pointed out, the Tec suffers from it's "standard" carb arrangement, which wears it's age and signs of neglect on it's sleeves, so to speak. Mechanically, non of my Tecs have given me trouble, but ALL of problems ended up being the carbs;.. ...filled with MickeyMousite and gremlins, requiring new gaskets and cleaning.
No experience with either of the OHV motors from the Big Two.
Sorry! !
Back to IronMan's question, will these Tec 2 strokes rev up like the LawnBoys and the B/S motors? If so, then they seem to be a pretty good deal. I think the 5hp is 139cc.

Yea, the 10 horse on the gen clogged a jet, I wasnt thinking clearly at that time and kept turning out the needle to compensate, eventually it rattled out, power went out and the thing goes to an idle pouring black smoke with the carb at wide open. That pissed me off but otherwise it seems to fire right up every time. The tiller has an old tec on it (cast iron) too, only problem was something in the ignition system, we ended up just replacing it all.

Inherited a 5hp that ran after sitting on a shelf for 50 years, short block rebuild that had never been ran. fired up second pull.

I suppose they are pretty good but i hear the newest ones have plastic cams in them. I generally just avoid anything with a fixed carb and things seem to work out fine.

Plastic cams- I thought the cam-lobe area was one of the highest loaded/wearing areas on a 4-stroke? If they can get away with plastic, or feathers, or saltines, great. They must rely on low spring pressure!...(?)

Back to the Tec 5hp 139cc 2-stroke.... whatdaya think, Russ? Your 2 cents? It's almost the same displacement as the Duraforce. After seeing the DuraForce vid, I'm dying to try a 2-stroke project. (Besides the Sno-Mo motor)

I think one of the 5hp models has a stepped 5/8" shaft. but it's long enough to bolt a clutch on... (model # escapes me), plus, the DuraForce is now a know quantity:thumbsup: - there's just gonna be a huge grab for them!
