Hi there everyone.
I have read numerous post on this forum before but I just made an account so you could say I'm "New" :cornut:

Anyways, I recently picked up this kart for $250 and the guy said it's ready to go but it just needs new front tires... alright. Sounds fair to me.

I wasn't really worried if it worked or not since I'm decent with these small engines.

I've cleaned the frame, degreased all of it, got all the gunk off the engine, oiled some parts on the frame & engine, drained the oil (holy cow! that had to been the dirtiest oil I've ever seen!), removed the old spark plug and looked inside the head. The cylinder is not that dirty and the valves look okay. I might clean that later on. I did not take the carb apart as I might do that later on as well. It didn't look too bad either. I'm waiting on a few parts from Amazon to get going, those are supposed to get here tomorrow.

Now here is where I am so confused. I have removed the engine from the frame and removed the part where it connects the throttle cable to the engine. I accidentally stretched out the throttle return spring so I ordered a new one which will get here tomorrow. The whole throttle cable setup to the pedal on the frame is simple enough, and the part where it goes to the engine seems simple, but I think I am missing a linkage of some sort. I started the engine with a tiny bit of gas and it ran for around 10 seconds with the choke on, and around 5 with the choke off (I didn't really have any gas in it at all.) It seems like the throttle is not even connected to anything and has no effect whatsoever. Below are pictures and a video of me trying to show you what it is doing and maybe you guys could give me some info on this... I'll reply with more pictures/info if you guys need anything.

Thank you so much!

I'm planning to do something like that later on. Do the linkages look correct though? I've never really seen anything like this and I'm quite confused. I guess I can just install it in the cart and see if it runs but it just doesn't make sense to me. In the video you may be able to see what I mean.

Thanks!

It doesn't even seem like it has a throttle linkage. This is probably confusing me much more than it should. If you guys have any input please let me know.

Thank you!

yes everything appears to be correct as far as the engine goes.

On the bottom where your throttle cable is clamped on, you will see that square box looking thing with two holes in it.... the thing that moves back and forth when you pushed on the governor arm.... THAT square box needs a throttle stop attached to it.

a throttle stop that works with it is found here
http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_37116_37116

also if you had a cylinder end on your throttle cable you could attach this to it
http://www.bmikarts.com/Clevis-_p_1835.html

I have also seen an additional return spring on those engines that just hooks into the bottom part to help the throttle return to idle position. Check the briggs and stratton users manual for your engine, and you will find exactly what you are looking for. Just gotta do some digging on your own...

I have seen a few briggs 5 hp engines, and that engine looks like it has been taken care of very well. You are very lucky to have such a good looking engine considering its age.

Alright great. I do have a throttle stop but it is currently disassembled. I am waiting on a return spring to arrive tomorrow and then I'll throw it all back together. I was really confused because it seemed like nothing happened when I moved the throttle and I didn't see any linkages but I'll see how it all works once I throw it back in the kart tomorrow once I finish tuning it up. Thanks for those links btw.

I was suprised how well the engine turned out. It was in so-so shape when I got it, but after a LOT of degreasing and scrubbing, I got it looking nice. I'll post a video once I get it all back together.

Cheers! :cheers2:
