1971 Honda SL100 Dirtbikes

Hey guys i saw this ad on craigslist and i was really thinking of getting them. Is this a good deal? Do any of you have any experience with this bike and if its a good bike? I was planning to use all the parts on one bike so that i have one good bike, and then take another one of the motors for my kart, and throw an electric motor or something in the last frame and ride it around in my street and to the park and such.

to much work, in my opinion I think you will loose money on it by having to buy new parts for everything. I think it would be for someone that collects or had it as a child and want their glory days back. but what do i know? go for it if you think it feels right.

You can find the same bike or type of bike complete for the same money.

yeah thats what i was thinking. Talking him down, going to check them out, and then buying them.

Fixing the one thats complete, and then dropping an electric motor in the other frame, and then out of the two engines fixing them up and making one god engine to throw into my kart.

Edit: I called him and he says that he still has them. He lives like 10 minutes away from my house and says that i can make arrangements with him to go check them out.

if i were to get this and fix it up, would i be able to keep up with my friends on the trails around here? they have newer bikes and quads and stuff. is this an automatic bike or does it have gears?

Well, being that a running bike sells for the cost of that lot you want to buy, you can't sell it for much. And no, that probably won't keep up too well. 40 year old engines don't have the output and power of a newer one. There is nothing automatic about it, it uses a clutch and a foot shifter. You will need to make a longer clutch cable to a pedal or steering wheel butterfly and then also rig up a longer shifter arm to change gears.

man i really like this bike for some reason. im gonna give him a call tomorrow and see if hell take 100 for the one thats complete and one of the engines. will that be more realistic?

big head i was looking at your video on the ds80 rebuild. very cool project! If i were to buy just the one that is complete would i just have to clean the carb and change the spark plug to get it running like yours? If he can negotiate the price for just that one then ill see about going over there and checking it out to see what conditiion the frame is in, and to check if the engine is in running condition. what are some thing that i should check for?

When I buy bikes like that I check the compession first thing. Then I will check for spark. In the ds80 case thats all I needed. I knew the two stroke would run. So yah if the have spark and good compression a good carb cleaning they should run. Some say the seals will go bad for sitting. But all the bikes I have restored the seals were fine after seen long times.

So yah check compression then check spark. Then check to see how complete it is? Stay away from bikes that sit outside unless thay have spark and compression that is.

my budget is no more than maybe 100 bucks, and im really looking for more of a project thats why i found this.
