I bought this for $40. The guy said it spent 10 years in the weather, and 30+ years in storage. My goal is to get it running.

I have a little rust in the tank!

First issue I've run into. One of the bolts that hold the cover to the engine is stuck, and it's only a flat head bolt. It's suck and starting to strip. Hopefully the metal rescue will help release it.

Tetanus, anyone?

Carb, fuel tank, and oil bath air breather. The dang air breather element is $30... hopefully I can find a cheaper on. I don't want to add a K&N filter. I want to restore to a "factory look".

My biggest problem is a stuck exhaust valve! It's in terrible shape!

There's a weird bring valve thing in there. I took it out and set it back into for a reference photo of the order of the parts. It actually sits dead center under that horizontal bolt. There is a breather hole under that bolt.

Hexxus (from FernGully) lived in here!

Oil, presumably, last changed in the 70's.

No plastic crap used back in the 50's!

INPORTANT TO KNOW, check your model's specs.... Lefty tighty, righty loosey on this guy.

I'm not getting a spark. Not sure if it's the plug or this points thing... I don't know much about this points thing, but I'll educate myself... More to follow once I start the rebuild/reassembly.

I have an oldie like that.. A number #14 BS.
Those are cool looking....

You might be able to find an old style filter to fit, or KN do make several thousand types explained in there catalogs online. Im sure they can get one to fit......

Another option is maybe go to a industrial filter shop, they have all sorts of filters for various machines and air compressors.

The crankcase looks good with no water in the base... so it held tight all these years... big bonus.
Im sure also the valve can be hand lapped to seal again, but I think the biggest thing will be the electrics, if they're alright...

It can be done!! I started with a 1952 5S last summer and found that just about any part you may need is available. There are lots on Flea-pay. The only part I found that is hard to locate is the exhaust valve, everything else is pretty easy including period correct decals. Good luck and enjoy!!!

All the original parts I need are on eBay, they're just expensive, because they're old and discontinued. I'm not going to start purchasing stuff though until I get that valve out, and make sure there isn't too much damage to the exhaust side. It was stuck open and rain water had been getting in the exhaust for decades. It's all iron, so I have to make sure there isn't massive rust pitting in there. If the block is ruined, I'm not replacing it. I'll just save the parts for the next Model 5 I find.

I can't find the crescent decal that goes on top of the oil bath element.

Try Jimenginedecals on Flea-pay. Yes, some parts are expensive but I just watched and waited and picked up a few pieces pretty reasonable. I got the intake valve for $7.50-free ship but never was able to find an exhaust valve. I found one NOS but passed on the $20 price. Just take your time, it will all come together.

I love the old restored stuff. So cool. I have a 1929 Essex that I've been working on for a while. Old stuff is just cool!

I just got into it, so '54 is the oldest that I have. I'd like to have a '20s engine running! That would be cool! I got a '57 6B-S running, I just need to start the repurbish/clean up. Then some 70-80's Briggs.

I opened up the intake as much as I felt safe doing, with a 1/2 drill bit. I need to measure the carb, to see if I can go bigger.

Yer Gettin' there Courts. You gonna love this thing, it's cute when it is running. Your fuel tank looks a little worse than mine did but I filled it with some old swing set chain and diesel, sealed it up shook the heck out of it every time I walked by it for a week. I washed it out, added fresh diesel and did it again. It came out looking pretty good. I got that tip from someone on this forum, along with boiling the carb in lemon juice. Carb came out slicker than possum snot on glass. I can't wait to see how this turns out, keep grinding.

Cast iron block, no less. Glad to see you're continually punching your Man Card on the "Rebuild an Engine" spot.

Any plans on revisiting the Tecumseh Powersport? :p

I think you're right. B&S is defiantly not making them like they used to... because they lasted too long. Then they started making cheap and less durable aluminum blocks. I think they understood planned obsolescence long before it became a thing.

Nah, I gave it to the kids across the street, with a list of parts they'll need.

I need to quit messing with these engines, and finish my Kart.

I got the gasket kit in the mail today. The gasket between the Carb and the fuel tank wasn't correct, so I'll have to get some gasket material and make one of those. Other than that, I think I have all the parts I need to (attempt to) get it running. Then it will just be cosmetic stuff required to finish it up.

The biggest issue you will run into is the if the magneto and flywheel have lost too much magnetism. If you have someone close to you or an old tractor shop around, they should be able to re-magnetize for you.

Easy test is if it wont hold a wrench or screwdriver across the armature, it will need to be re-magnetized.

Hopefully your adventure is smoother than mine with my two Model 19, your valves are certainly in better shape!

Edit: If you need the Briggs, manual let me know.

I got some cosmetic work done with duplicate-color engine enamel. Oil bath air breather painted.

Block is nice and shiny!

I left the base of the engine block bare aluminum. My plan is to try and polish it up.
