I honestly don't remember off the top of my head what the gearing is... haha. I will look and try to report back tomorrow. It feels fast enough when sitting in it, and in grass or dirt it will do doughnuts no problem. I can easily haul two 200lbs people around and still have some fun. I built it as just a cruiser for the camp ground. Throw a cooler on it and just mess around on private property :)

well I still did not look at the gearing.. haha. sorry about that. But, I did drive it down the road with a car following me and it averaged about 25mph. I do have a large sprocket on the axle, and I could use a slightly smaller belt on the TC (it is unable to fully extend on the driven from too much slack). I am happy with the speed it goes, as I said before... built for a campground and to haul people and crap. I'm not entering it in any races :) It still needs paint, but that requires time... and I don't have much of that right now.

Thanks for watching the progress everyone!

steering.

Kentguy - VERY cool design. I love the twin seat arrangement.

I think you'll be happy with the 40 series.

Let me know how the EZ-GO steering unit works - I was thinking that may be a good upgrade for my kart too.

Keep the pictures coming and post a video or two as the project progresses. Great work so far.

Well... after some test runs and a few miles under my belt I feel its safe to report my preliminary findings.

The rack and pinion steering is a really cool design, and works well at slow and moderate speeds. At the higher speed it makes it hard to control, once you start to drift left or right... the correction creates a negative oscillating effect. Example, if I drift right and correct by turning left, it corrects too much creating a need to turn back to the right. Every correction is worsens until eventually I have to slow down and let it correct itself. Part my the problem may lay in the crappy, under-inflated front tires. I will soon swap the front tires with new ones and report back.

You can't lose with a Comet 40- I joyfully beat the wee out of mine and it only came back for more.

Now- are you quite sure the belt size is the limiting factor in your top speed? If you download the manual for that unit, or a comet belt chart, you can very easily determine whether your belt size is appropriate for your clutch spacing. It is possible that your belt is fine but your gearing is off. You can also (see manual) adnjust your 40 to "shift" with different timing which may help your case.

Hi... it is a combination of what you listed. I bought the belt before I officially assembled the engine/jackshaft. It is slightly larger than I need, but only by a 1/2" or so. When I wear it out I'll buy the proper belt. In the mean time, I don't ride this thing top speed often anyways. Thanks for the input, I'm familiar with the spring settings and colors as well.

Need help!!! The engine is bogging down when the throttle is opened to FULL. I have adjusted the manual choke, and it seems to make a difference. If I close the choke, as in the position for starting, it seems to run a little better. With an open choke, as in warm engine, it won't run much higher than an idle setting and approaches stalling out.

- I have tried: fresh gas, no air filter, adjusting the screw, adjusting the idle.

This thing ran great two weeks ago. I'm not sure what changed that this thing acts like it "boggs down" at rpm's above half throttle.

Any suggestions?

Thanks. Ryan

Sounds as though it is running lean, check for:

-air leaks between carb and engine
-clogged fuel line
-clogged fuel filter
-clogged main jet

r97 - You may be on to something. I have yet to add a fuel filter to the line, so that is coming within the day. I added some injector cleaner to it this morning and am running some gas thru it now to see if it will break loose. I hope thats all it is, I really do not want to tear this thing apart.

400 - This is my first cart that I designed on the fly while building. I had the intention of using it for hauling people and a cooler around at the house and/or a campground. It actually handles very poorly on pavement due to the live axle, but on grass it is a lot of fun. Just no major trails since it has no suspension and will rattle your brain out of your skull, lol. I have been wanting to build another cart using this one as the donor, but haven't started it yet due to money and mostly, TIME.

I see the rust is starting to get a hold of the metal .It is only surface rust now, but just keep an eye on it. You might want to paint the frame

I love the kart

Thanks. I wish I would have painted it two years ago when I bought the steel. haha. Now I have to sand it. Paint is in the plan.... but I need to find the time first.
