If you haven't guessed yet, I have an old lawn tractor that I have been wanting to steal the engine out of to make some sort of project. The only problem is that I don't know what I want to throw it into.. and it needs some carborator work. They are expensive to order from the dealer.

Has anyone used any universal type carbs that can be used in random engines with little to no modifications?

I would guess that the reason they are specific is because they need to line up with factory linkages and the like. Since I won't be leaving it in the stock location, I don't think that matters much.

You are going to have to get a carb that is the same size as the one you have, but other than that you can make any type of linkage work with some hard work and ingenuity.

Without dialithium cyrstals....this build is going to be challenging....vertical shaft engines are very nearly the kiss of death.:surrender:

I don't believe Onan ever made a vertical shaft engine. An Onan engine out of a garden tractor doesn't make a good engine for a go kart or mini bike. They are very heavy for there output and internal engine parts are very expensive. If it runs good try and sell it. Garden tractor restorers pay good money for running Onans.

Could run a v belt from the engine, then line up pulleys to run it horizontally. It's doable, just going to cost a lot in parts.

A designer knows he has achieved perfection, not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.

Great input guys. Maybe I will let this one get away. I will list it for sale as is.

Ive never seen a vertical shaft Onan?

Dont give up on it just yet... Head over to ATLTF.com for some inspiration, maybe join and start a build (but post it here too! Some of us like that kind of stuff :D ).
