Hey,

I have a 18HP Briggs and Stratton engine that I am planning to put on a go kart. It is a Vertical Shaft so I am going to have to do some fabrication.. but that is besides the point.

So I made an engine stand for it, and it is basically 2 legs and each leg is made up of 3 blocks of wood. I am having one problem though.. I cannot get the mounting bolts to secure in the wood. How can I get a bolt to secure/lock in wood?

Umm, if you have to ask this question, Id suggest setting down your tools and slowly backing away...

Haha I know was thinking the same thing, I couldn't think of what I was supposed to use for this.

I was supposing thread locker of some sort, but that didn't seem right for wood..

Any serious answers?

:toetap05:You need to read up on your fasteners.

Oh haha very nice I was thinking they made something like this! Hopefully I can find that in the same thread type as the mounting bolts.

why dont u just drill a hole in the wood and pass the bolt though
u wont need to run the engine for long on the stand so it wont matter

u can get big wide washers (panel washers) that will stop the bolt pulling though

if the mounts are not threaded then u can use eather what devino said or just drill right though and put a nut on the other side

Well that is what I did, I pre-drilled holes first and then threaded the bolt in but of course the bolt pulls right out and allows the engine to spin as much as possible.

Would big washers actually stop it? I thought the bolt would just be able to spin. The mounting bolts have lock washers but those did not do anything.

And the mount is threaded.

I need a pic. I'm having a tough time understanding what you're after. Are you "threading" the bolts INTO the wood, or thru the wood, and INTO metal?

Okay, I get it now. Ignore the fact that the holes in the engine block are threaded. Use lag bolts like Devino246 suggested that are just small enough to pass through the holes without screwing up the threads. Run the lag bolts down through the engine block into the wood. Use a washer between the bolt head and the engine block. Pre drill the wood with a bit that is about 1/2 the diameter of the bolt and use a socket wrench or ratcheting box end wrench to drive it in. Should be a very tight fit.
