How big/heavy is the kart?
...what does that motor weigh?
...what batteries (type/size) do you have in mind to power that monster motor?

Big(er) issues,
1.) your not gonna get much top speed with a max RPM of only ~1,600RPM

2. a) you gotta find a compatible speed controller for that motor type (PM, Series wound, Sep-ex. etc.)
2. b) & purchase (probably in the $300.00+ range)

id like to go with (6) 6V batteries and gear it for a respectable top end. kart without the motor weighs about 70 lbs. the motor weighs about 60 lbs too

that motor isn't going to give you much joy I'm afraid
~1200 W of power isn't going to be much fun on if you want to move two people around,
and it's a terrible "plan" to overvolt it by 50% of it's rating
especially seeing that it has a 70° temp rating;
You will boil of the coil insulation in no time I assume

that thing is most certainly a stationary motor, build to run in controlled environment at a constant speed AND load 24/7

i am new to electric motors, ratings and how watts relate to useful applications. wouldn’t the high current ratings at such a relatively low rpm of this motor basically pull serious torque? by keeping the voltage at 24 and rely on the torque to handle my higher gearing, id like to see if this kart can hit 30 mph. this motor is massive and “looks” like it could power
thru. 24v at 57a & 1600rpm is only 1300 watts yes but wouldn’t the power pretty much be untaxed? thats my hope... 57amps is crazy... right?

well it's 1368 Watts ELECTRICAL yes..
but given the size and rating of that thing..
it's less than 1200 Watts MECHANICAL (1.6 hp rating means roughly 1176 watts)
the rest will be turned to heat
and heat it doesn't like as it's telling us

It's a sep-ex motor, which is partly a good thing,
since you can NOT boil off magnetic field strength
of a permanent magnet that you don't have.
But with a rating of just 70°C you can still get in troubles rather easily..
And I'm afraid (since there is no permanent magnet)
that means the insulation lacquer on the coils,
or the epoxy used to put it all together isn't too tolerant..
and once that burns off you either create a mechanical failure that's going to hurt badly,
or worse you short the coils and with that essentially the controller and lastly the batteries..

Go ahead, give it a try..
you'lll need a relatively expensive controller to power a sep ex motor for EV applications
(kellycontroller.com has a KDZ-GDV ~180 bucks 24V-48V 100Amps [smallest recommended])
I'd recommend a thermal control as well, just to be sure you do not accidentally fry the controller.
(just a few dollars to get one thermal protection going)

but sure
thanks to the massive weight and the sep ex config you can create a rather impressive torque (for a short burst)
I think stall torque wise it should be able to outperform a 48V 1800 BLDC easily.

But I don't need to tell you that you can run faster without a kid piggybacked..
and that your motor is essentially that kid...
and you need about a second kid worth of batteries...

So essentially you need the power of a four seater (2+2 as the italians say)
to move two people ....
so no matter what.. do not expect much in terms of speed from it.
you will need a serious gear reduction either way.
Mostly in order to keep it from stalling and transferring ALL power to heat instead of movement.

As long as you're aware,
that you will need to spend a lot of money just to find out if you're underpowered.
I see no problem.

PS frankly.. put it on a single seater and see how that goes first..
and only if your buttock judgement says it's fine to add one more person think about a two seater.

so, i have two of these identical motors. theyll shoehorn in there too. double the weight, yes but dual 24v systems equate to over 2600 watts. kart with batteries would weigh close to 350lbs. thoughts?

yes;
you are not listening ...!
2352 is not over 2600 ;)

Sidenote:
one controller for a sep ex motor like you have alone is more expensive than
a 2kW BLDC Motor WITH controller on ebay
(less weight too)

So maybe you want to think about that anyways.

It'll be like driving a brick :ack2:
…& with ALL of that weight in the rear, your probably gonna have "big time" understeering issues
…plus, just the (2) controllers are gonna be ~$400.00 :smiley_omg:

IMO You would be better off (cost & weight) with (2) 48V 1,000W MY-1020's :cheers2:

...~$100.00 ea.
…~20 lbs. ea.
…& you can run 'em with smaller batteries

That is the set up on the !Arriba! kart :2guns:

Sorry..
I know it's disheartening to read that..
but you cannot run the motor without a controller
(not for longer than maybe 10 seconds every five minutes)
in order to prevent it from overheating,
and SepEx Controllers are not exactly cheap unfortunately.

Plus it's comparatively underpowered and overweight which isn't exactly a great combination.
And the presumably nice torque it's likely capable of, can only compensate for so much...

If you want, we talk you through that, but it's not a great idea,
it's not the cheapest nor the most powerfull solution out there.
Not even the most reliable really (given the lousy temp rating of 70°C for 1hr max)
And we want to be sure you are aware of that.

That motor is a beast. Run her at 36v and she will have no problem moving that kart with 2 people in it. Get a 190amp + controller for it.(40$ on ebay) If it gets hot change the gearing.

You hit the nail on the head here.
