What about keeping it simple with belts and pulleys?

some old mowers use a twisted belt. Dunno how well that actually works. Otherwise you could use belt drive to a lawnmower gearbox/diff

i have heard the belt and pulley system work but ive also heard that you burn through more rubber belts than you do tyres!

They also moved alot slower than most of us would like. :roflol:
Belts work fine for the right application, I dont think a balt setup like Crazyman diddled up would be efficient, it may take up quite a bit of space.

Then again, perhaps it couls be made to work. Still, I dont think it would be good if you wanted any sort of speed from it.

My $.2...

use a snowblower transmission or riding lawnmower transmission, In all honesty, just invest in a horizontal shaft engine. Now they are found for $150 easily, much cheaper if used.

By reducing the size of the pulley on the transmission you instantly increase your speed; those things use some big a$$ pulleys.

You have the right idea with the angle grinder gearbox; see if you can get hold of a larger right angle gearbox to suit you application

word of caution with angle grinders, they are made for high speed, very low torque applications. if you put it even into a 2-stroke mini bike with a 3yr old riding it, you better have some really low gearing. also, think about how you will mount it/transfer the torque. on that note, see how much money and more importantly TIME you would like to spend on this project :D

you are more than welcome to experiment, we would all love to know how it goes and wish you luck!!!

These people have a load of RA gear boxes. They are quite pricy though. Maybe mc master has some bevel gears and you could build an oil filled housing?
