150cc scooter engine

Would a 150cc knock off of the Honda GY6 be any good for making an off-road go-kart?

My wife and I have two crappy Tank scooters and we're looking at options for what to do with these POS Chinese made scooters once we upgrade to Honda Ruckus'.

It's a 4stroke... just like the original GY6, but Chinese made.

you can use it for a go kart but it wont have much power unless you run both engines on one cart

Well pooples... so how fast do these Briggs & Statton motors go? The 5HP ones? I see that they're being used quite a bit in other go-karts.

Basically, we want to make some carts that we can use on a semi flat dirt track. Something that isn't going to be really slow so adults can enjoy it as well. We don't want the slow little carts you'd find at an amusement park.

Those gy6 clone are popular on the cheaper chinese karts, and i think they would work out alright for a kart, probably better than a 5hp briggs at least, if you got them go for it.

gy6 are good motors as far as power, but some of the internals (cam chain, chain guides, piston rings) are lower quality. they use the 150's in small sandrails, and they do a good 30-40mph. pretty good acceleration, descent life span on stock parts. plus the upgrades are about the same price as the ones for briggs, honda etc.

Ok cool. I'm not looking for a competition set up... just something that my wife and friends could enjoy on our own track.

Is there a "how-to" guide on how to set this stuff up? Something that explains how things work and how to set it up properly. I'm new to the site and have seen some pretty sweet stuff. Can't wait to start building a kart.

nope there is no certain way to set anything up. just start building and post lots of piks so we can help you out as you go.

PS with the upgrades you can get for a 5hp briggs you'll have alot more power and are the traditional go kart engines.

on a briggs probably 40-50mph depending on gear ratio and what not. But i'm not that familiar to the engine so maybe some of the guys could better answer that question.

i say go for the it if its free, and as for your scooters recycle and make something out of them many different karts can be made with either of the three.

Now how cheap can it be for you to have a go kart i dunno ask yourself:

*what kinda of go kart do i want?
*do i want to build a frame or buy one?
*how much money am i willing to spend?

Off-road kart for a dirt track (no real jumps or climbing or anything like that)

Built frame, not bought.

Spend enough money to make it last more than one run and be enjoyable for awhile. We've got plenty of time to build this up, doesn't have to be built right away.

This is the 2nd or 3rd time I have read on here about the gy6 not being good. Care to explain more?

I am curious because I have a 150cc Chinese scooter sitting outside that has over 10k miles on it with no mechanical issues. I have it hitting 70mph (gps verified) all day long for over 2 years.

I have an upgraded exhaust, a no rev limit/timing advance CDI, 12g rollers, kevlar belt, and a #20 main jet. The scooter has to be at least 250lbs and I am 200.

So why would this not have any power on a cart?

Because on a kart it'll be the wieght of the frame and everything not including the engine roughly 200-300lbs plus your own weight another 200lbs then the engine a got 50-150lbs.

you haven't replaced the rings with some out of japan or from wiseco? i've worked on a few for customers, rings, camchain, and electrical are the most common problems. these were the four wheelers, i've worked on a 50cc scooter. worn rings, maybe 200 miles on it. granted, they were cheap when they came out, and people don't always break them in right, but to have those parts wear out in less than three years (cam chain especially) not very good. say you buy five of these chinese vehicles, different brands, but same, they will have different electronics packs, in the engine.

You dont think that same motor setup could push a 300lbs kart with a 200lbs driver at a decent speed on its own?

It could, and does. Its used in many cheap go karts, and pushes them about 40mph. Its not an AMAZING engine or anything, but not horrible either. Also, dont forget, your scooter has skinny tires, and only 2 of them, quite a bit less friction than 4 go kart tires, that may or may not be knobby.

The upgrades for a 5hp briggs are becoming scarce and pricey. They are not the best idea now days to play with.

From what i've heard on scooter sites, the GY6 has a crapload of engine mods... couldn't that be incorporated into a go-kart to make it even better performance wise?

I was wanting to use the GY6 as we've got two scoots that will someday be my donors for a project, we were going to swap the GY6 into a Honda Ruckus to give it more umph, but then I saw a go-kart on Craigslist and thought of the awesome possibilities of having a dirt road worthy go-kart to race w/friends.

Not to mention it'd get a lot better gas than a 2 stroke, thus relieving the pain of spending more money on gas. Not that it'd be too huge of an issue since it wouldn't be a daily driver (on the road at least)

How does the chain hook up to the engine in order to rotate the back wheels giving it power?

I'm not really mechanical yet and was curious as to how this works.

This guy breaks down the GY6 clones on his website. http://www.key-ideas.com/Yerf-Dog-3206-Howhit-Engine.htm He seems to give it a positive reaction. He has this article and an article of his mods if you go back to his go kart page. Judging from what he says I would be willing to try it on a kart.
