VIDEO ADDED AT BOTTOM :)

I have a 13 hp motor I am trying to put on the go kart. It's almost ready to mount but I had a few questions. Does it matter which way the Driven unit goes on the jackshaft?
In one of the pictures you can see the driven close to some part of the frame. Can I cut that bar off to make room?

I have some pictures to help. The rear sprocket seems to be kind of close to the driven. In the last picture you can see how close the driven is to that bar that I am asking about.
In the 2 pictures before that are the options on mounting the driven.

The shaft isnt supposed to stick out of the end of the drive unit. Get a long bolt to keep it on. I was thinking the same thing when I installed A TC on my mini bike. good luck

My Comet TAV2-30 is the same way. Comet includes a longer bolt to solve that problem.

And a 13hp motor with a torque converter is going to KICK! haha

There is bad news here, I'm afraid. You must have upgraded from a Comet 30 to a Comet 40 Torque converter. The driven for a 40 fits opposite than a 30 (I have one Kart with each). Therefore, the way you have it in the first 2 photos won't work. It is mounted correctly in the 2nd 2 photos, but you are way out of alignment with the drive.
I did a similar engine upgrade and had to put in a full jackshaft. This also mean putting the sprockets on the opposite side of the engine. Good luck.

Well in fact that's a Comet 500 series, very nice cluth with a wide speed reduction ratio. The only solution I see for the driven misalignment issue is that you use a longer shaft and 2 pillowblock bearings bolted to the frame. The other option would be to extend the engine shaft but that's just too risky since youll need to completely disassemble the engine and the shaft could bend.

McNelius, your second picture won't work correctly. the driven is designed to expand as belt tightens from your driver. in the second pic the driven is simply not made for that belt rotation. 3rd and 4th pics shows correct orientation of driven. as far as the brace that's in the way, in my opinion i would simply cut it off the frame at both points and move it back the least amount i had to to clear my driven and re-weld it back to the frame and cut off any excess that i thought i had to if any. you may have to remove the front tabs hanging there to keep clear of your axle. wire brush it and paint as close to match as i could to deter any rust. hope this helps.

My uncle owns a big shop not far from me, and he has a metal guy that I am going to have make me a new motor mount. I am going to raise the motor up just a little bit and over to the left so I can line up the driver / driven. I just brought it up there today, and Tuesday I will go up there to work on it with the guy.

I'll let you guys know what happens :)

Worked on it for about 4 hours today, and got the motor mounted up pretty nicely I think. Going to fix the brakes, put some oil and gas in, and run it around :).

Good job, and hey the worst that can happen is you have to re-engineer something.
It's called learning. Keep at it.

That's the way I look at it too. It's better than sitting around doing nothing, I like to learn.

I'm gonna bring it back to my house tomorrow and get back at it a little bit and once it's running I'll post a video.

Thanks freak boy, i appreciate that.

Looks like you are just a belt and brakes away from putting that thing on the road... and it's looking good...

The belt should be here by tomorrow morning. I started the motor though with the driver on it. It opens up right away, is it supposed to? or should it stay closed til it revs up a little? When i shut it off, it also stays open... I have to squeeze it (lightly) to close it up. Will the belt make a difference?

Can't wait to hear how it runs! I just picked up that exact same engine yesterday and I'm trying to decide on clutch type and gearing. What diameter rear tires are you running?

Also, are you going with electric start or just the pullstart?

It's pull start for now, but I am going to get a battery and get it on the electric start :). I found a wiring diagram for it on mancos website so I have to re-wire it all since there are some wires missing. But yeah, it started in like half of a weak pull lol. It sounds good, started up super easy... so it should be a good little engine. The rear tires are 18inches.

When I am done i'll put a video up. :D

Thanks for the help so far.

I'm debating on the electric start. I'd like to have lights on my kart, but I could power those off a little 7aH gel cell, which I have on hand. To use the battery to turn over the engine I'd need a garden tractor battery at minimum, I'd think. But it would be pretty cool to just turn the key to start it up!

I've got 18" rear tires as well; can't wait for the video!

Don't start the engine without the belt installed, the driver may get locked open and you'll need to take it apart to fix it which can be a pain in the butt!!!!
