I feel that if he's going to take this to parking lots and other paved or smooth places, a high quality cent. clutch will suffice. But if he plans on inconsistent throttling and offroad riding, then a TC is the best bet. I can see how they would have their weaknesses, but the advantage of variable ratios and partial throttling is almost unbeatable when the argument is cent. clutch vs. TC.

oh. hello. lol

And VWOOSH! it goes as it flies over your head.

anderkart--------what kind of cent clutch would you recomend if he were to go that route?

I just picked up a 11hp clone today, im definately going to be using a cent-clutch on my kart, yard and pavement riding, no steep grades or mud.

I believe that Noram makes high quality cent. clutches. I would like to hear from AnderKart what kind he feels are the best as he's one of the few racers here.

Anderkart, thanks for your input. I always just assumed that CVT's weren't allowed in racing, perhaps having to do with the variable ratio. As always, your input is appreciated, especially when you hit on something the others (myself included) may have missed.

This is one of those things that makes this a terrific forum. With differing experiences and opinions, the best solutions can always be found.

My kart weighs 410lbs with me in it, and has 20+hp. I would absolutely prefer to have my centrifugal clutch over any torque converter system in my
)

Hey there ander(and anyone else with input). Since you are talking about weight...I thought I would chime in with my situation. I am big like you...only I'm heavier. Lol. Myself and my kart(when finished) will weigh about 500ish lbs. I really do not want to use a torque converter. Just don't like the way they look(not a good reason...I know) and I don't want to add a jackshaft. Now, I don't care about having crazy quick acceleration...I just want to be able to drive(on flats asphalt/concrete surfaces) and not burn up clutches constantly. I know the more you start and stop the more wear you put on the shoes...and the heat, etc... What might be the best bet for me with a 500lb kart/driver? What advantages do disk clutches have over shoe/drum clutches?

Liverider- Is a motorcycle engine/tranny combo an option for you?

Hello. Yes it will be an option for the future of this kart...but not right now. I forgot some detail in my last post. I currently have a 6.5 BSP(box stock project) clone from ARC racing. With its mods, it should produce around 10hp...top rpm somewhere around 5800 I'm thinking. I have 15" rear tires...that are actually only about 13.5" mounted and inflated...they are stretched onto wider wheels. Right now I have a 65 tooth rear sprocket, and a regular shoe/drum centrifugal clutch with 13 teeth(MaxTorque...came with purchase of engine)...giving me 5:1 reduction. I'm running 35 chain. I would like to stick with 5:1 for top end(like I said, I don't care about slower starts as long as it doesn't kill whatever clutch I am running).
I have decided to upgrade to a bike motor/gearbox...but probably not within the next year. I aiming for simplicity at this point. So even if I have to spend $300 on my clutch...I would willingly do so if it gets me what I'm after. And I have seen some disk clutches north of $300...lol. I am about to do some research on disk clutches to see if they can help move my heavy self and kart.

Thanks!

EDIT: This is the clutch that came with my engine:

I went ahead and ordered the noram 10t

the 10t in a 1" are hard to come by, these are for #40/41 chain

heres a few links to the ones i found

BMI are out of stock, anyone know the HP rating on these?

For the best 1"-bore #40/41 drum clutch I'd recommend the Noram Enforcer: http://www.out2win.com/catalog/noram_enf.html

The Noram 1600 is dam good, but the Enforcer has a 1/2" larger-diamiter, drum size (4-3/4"x1-3/16" ID.)
It'd survive way more h/p and abuse from heavy karts/riders than a 1600...

Disk clutches are cool if your trying to shave 10's of a second off your lap times at a racekart track, but they'll end up needing more maintenance, adjustments and rebuilds than drum clutches...

I'd get one of these from whoever has the best price and lowest shipping cost:
http://www.out2win.com/catalog/noram_geu.html - good, better than a MaxTorque.
http://www.out2win.com/catalog/stinger.html - also good
http://www.out2win.com/catalog/titan.html - real good
http://www.out2win.com/catalog/titan.html#MC - this Mini-Cup model is the best 3/4" bore drum clutch I know of.
