I have a 12.5hp briggs and stratton vertical shaft. It has one of those "balancers" in it.I wanted to do a vertical to horizontal conversion for awhile. Since there has been alot of threads about this I was wondering can that big block act as an oil splasher? It goes up and down in the engine, and it comes close to the bottom where the oil would be. Would it splash around enough oil to lube the engine? And input would be appreciated.

The balancer won't help lubrication at all, and in fact you'll need to remove it competely for a vertical conversion. Any rod dipper you fabricate would simply smash into the balancer block the first time you crank the engine over. That engine should be a real powerhouse though! Have fun :D

Do you think I can weld a paddle underneath the balancer to splash the oil? I can't remove the assembly.

If you can't remove the counterweight you're next best bet is to source a non-syncro balanced crankshaft from a horizontal shaft engine. You'll need to find the model number of your engine to assist in sourcing the correct crank.
