110cc kart, electric shift?

OK. I spent some time on google researching those numbers. But thats just the model number for the motor. The same model # showed varying transmissions. When running that motor, i noticed it did not shift on it's own and there is no shifter lever on the motor. Is it possible that this motor only has 1 gear? That would suck..., if so i will probably be installing a 200cc 5speed that i have on this kart.

The engine might be an automatic. In other words, hit the gas and it goes. No CVT, just a centrifugal clutch inside the case. Many of the 110 clone ATV's are that way.

I will quote myself here. Again, that motor is an automatic. No gears. Have one in the basement torn half apart. Has a wet centrifugal clutch in the case and that's it. Not all the 100-110's are auto clutch 4 or 5 speeds. Some are single speed automatics, some are single speed automatics with foward and reverse. No shift lever is a single speed auto.

OK so that will not be fast enough. Is there any way to strip that clutch and install a torque converter?

If not, like I mentioned before, I have a Chinese 200cc 5 speed manual sitting in my garage. It doesn't run and I'm not sure whats wrong with it. It would be difficult to install a clutch and shifter on that kart though. Has anyone perfected the art of a clutch/brake combo yet?

Uhhh... well I'm not sure what that means but i had an idea about making the clutch and brake the same pedal like a tractor mower. connect clutch with a stiff spring so that the end of the pedal is brake and the spring eats the excess. two pedals with three uses. a third pedal is not an option for this kart and i don't really want to try to attach a dirt bike clutch lever to the steering wheel as this kart's steering wheel turns 540 degrees.

Well that band brake is a cool idea... But this is a motor from a dirtbike. The clutch is enclosed. I was thinking of attaching my clutch cable to the existing brake pedal with a spring. I've never seen that idea for a steering wheel clutch and it's a great option. A little expensive considering how simple it is but no matter, it's the idea that matters. I can make that.

Sorry, if I got it right, every time you disengage the clutch, your brake will activate? Why would you want that? I've never seen a kart that you had to turn the steering wheel 540* to turn. That's a full rotation of the steering wheel PLUS a half turn..... Every kart I've had, had a 180* swing.... That means if your left hand is at 9 o'clock and you turn full right, your hand should now be at 12 o'clock......
If that's the case, put the clutch on the wheel. It makes life so much easier..... :thumbsup:

I think he meant that the first half of the "brake" travel is clutch, the other half is brake.
So half way pressed in the clutch is fully disengaged. Other half you begin to brake.
And with a stiffer spring after the half way point so you feel that you dont brake when you dont want to.

Yeah i thought it a little strange myself... although it does make physically turning the wheel much easier. From pointing straight ahead the wheel turns 1 1/4 turns in either direction. The steering column ends in a gear box similar to some tractor mowers. That's why i would like to clutch at the pedal. The kart has hydraulic brakes so i push the pedal about two inches before the brakes engage. If i set it up right i should be able to push the pedal those first two inches to disengage clutch and the rest to brake. Obviously it would take a little trial and error to get it right and some practice to get used to but surely it's possible. Or i suppose I could fab something similar to rmm727's post,: (http://s143.photobucket.com/user/westfield_photos/media/P1010057.jpg.html), but maybe make it an enclosed circle lever under the steering wheel so that no matter the turn, the clutch would always be wherever you reach. I'm not sure though how difficult it could be to turn the steering wheel that far and work the clutch and gear shifter simultaneously. It would certainly require a lot of coordination. Maybe I'm better off putting the 110 back in this kart for my 9 yr old and the 200 in the bigger two seater i have which has room enough for a clutch pedal. Options, options, options. I'll post more pics of what i have and let the pros at DIY help me decide the best course of action.

Originally I planned to put the 200 in the black kart but the rear suspension is way too weak for 50+ mph. I fear it also may be too weak for the torque that the 14hp will produce. Also I really don't want to have to buy a 40 series torque converter and then have to fab a bracket for the driven. A centrifugal clutch, though much cheaper, would not offer even close to the speed of a torque converter.
The motor mounts on the red kart seem like I could just bolt the 200cc right on but then I'm faced with the issue of clutch and shifter connections. I could modify the motor deck and install the 14hp instead and then deal with a motor mount for the black kart coupled with the 200cc.
So basically I'm asking for opinions...; what would you do?

Ok so the 200cc will not just bolt right into the red kart and the frame on that kart is very rusty under the paint so it will be receiving the 110cc for kids only. 14hp will go in the black two seater i guess. Considering it's such an old motor, I wonder if I can get away with using a 1" 30 series converter with the driven and bracket I already have. Probably put the 200cc back in the bike with a smaller drive sprocket and a more aggressive tire. But it will be slow going. All of this will take at least the rest of the year.
