Hi, my son and I are beginning our research and just curious if there would be any reason to build a kart with a 1600w motor vs. a 1000w motor? Would it purely be just a speed upgrade? By going with a bigger motor right off, you won't have to upgrade as quickly, as jr. grows.
Also, the motor you linked is (3) speed capable (at the flip of a switch)
...so, you can start jr. off at a reduced speed
...& then, switch it to go faster, as he grows & his skills improve

Thanks for the reply. I ended up going with the 1000w just as a precaution. While in "theory" I could step down the 1600w's speed my little Evil Knievel would certainly take full advantage of a higher speed option. I figure this is going to a starter kart anyway. He can always work for a larger motor down the road!
And just an extra update: The kid was jumping out of his seat when the motor kit arrived today. We unboxed it and I walked him through how it all worked. I even got him to draw his first wiring diagram to help him understand the circuitry. (I think we got this right)
I tested it all out (success!) when he went to bed so I was sure it would work when he's awake in the AM to try it himself. He will be smiling ear to ear when he hears that motor hum.
