A while ago I picked up a 2 seater dingo style go kart for 40 bucks. The engine was locked, so it kinda sat around for a while. I picked up a 224 from harbor freight for only 60 bucks a few weeks later planning to bolt it on and have fun for 100 bucks. Well, life got in the way so I didn't get to it for a while, but today I unbolted the 196cc boat anchor and slapped the 224 on there. I need to clean up the comet 30 series on it, it is pretty corroded, but I think it's savable, and throw a new 30 series belt I had laying around on. Tonight, or maybe tomorrow I should have it ripping for just 100 bucks!

The job's taken a lot longer than I thought. I'm still hoping to get the kart riding tonight, everything but the engine was functional (was told it was running and riding perfectly until the engine locked up). I'll be home in about another hour. It's probably gonna take me 20 or 30 minutes to clean up and lubricate the CVT and get the engine fired up

This is the beast. The 224 is already mounted and I just have to clean up the CVT. It's currently raining so I'm in the garage, I just pushed her in.

Test run was a success! I need to do a backyard alignment though because it pulls very hard to the right and if I hit any bumps it gets very squirrely (I almost ended up in the drainage ditch) but it was a blast and I'm soaked now lol. I also saw a possum off to the side of the road (I live down a one lane road that doesn't get much traffic). This thing also rips around the yard. It only turns hard well on hard acceleration. Tomorrow during the daylight and wet pavement is when the fun really begins

I think the driver pulley shot. It will over rev going slow the. Suddenly big down as if the driven pulley just fully upgraded engaged. Plus it shredded my drive belt and the driver is not against the bushing like it's supposed to be at idle. But by God is it fast.

To save headache I'm probably just gonna order a 20 dollar driver that comes with a new belt. I know I should get a genuine comet belt, but I'm too cheap for that lol. Besides I hope to eventually put full independent suspension and maybe even a fourwheeler engine in this, so spending a lot on the CVT is pointless.

The cheap belt that you used is the cause of all your problems. Even if you replace the driver, with another cheap belt it will do the exact same thing. Genuine Comet Belts Only!!!!!
So then maybe I should spend the 30 bucks on getting a genuine comet belt and some dry graphite lube? I thought my issue was the CVT was disengaging too far, about 3/8" is uncovered by the brass bushing at idle

The only thing the brass bushing is for to keep the belt from riding on the shaft. Guys have been known to take those out completely when they wear out. But it makes grooves in the belt if left to idle too long so leave it on.
It seems to spin beautifully. I put the thinest layer of high speed wheel bearing grease on the inside (making sure it didn't get on the pulley) and it spins smoothly. I am gonna try a comet belt first since y'all say it's the cat's meow. I couldn't find my dry lithium grease so I didn't grease the driver much so stuff wouldn't get on the belt. That's probably part of my issue

Dry powdered graphite or another hack I use is spray lock lube, Lock-Ease is the brand. It’s a powdered graphite in a fluid spray. You can get it at ACE Hardware or NAPA, it works great!
The grease will migrate out and mist the belt with rpm. Throw in a little heat and it will foul up the belt in short order. I’d clean it out now and use my previous recommendations. But it’s your money at risk not mine. ACE even has the dry graphite powder.
Now you have seen how good the boiled yack grease and rice fiber belts are you can help spread the word!!!!

Hard to tell from the picture, but it sure looks like the inner sheave of the driver is way onboard compared to the inner one of the driven. They need to be almost dead on. A serious mismatch will eat a belt real quick.
I'll have to throw a straight edge on it and see, but you might be right. I kinda just slapped it together with parts I had and ripped it around a bit, even donuts in the driveway lol. Thanks for the advice

Thanks, I'll have to look around. I only put a.tad of grease on the center where the driver slides, none in the drum. Thanks!
