So, about two weeks ago I came across a FB marketplace ad for a $10 kayak. At first I thought perhaps it was a mistake or a bait price or if was correct that the kayak would just be completely wrecked. Ad confirmed there was damage on the underneath of the hull but it did not show or clarify the extent of the damage. I figured, it was only 45 minutes away and was just $10 and I really wanted an upgraded kayak. Msg the seller who was this girl at Texas AM selling it for her dad and mom who don't use FB. Agreed on a time to meet the following day. Got a late start after work and arrived there after sunset and forgot my proper flashlight but remembered I could just make do with my phone's flashlight. I arrived and the kayak was out in the front yard, and I was greeted by the girl's mother. I had her show me where the damage was but the entire area near the damage was covered by flashing tape. I buy it and drive off after a nice conversation with the mother.

Two days later I begin examining the damage. I removed the flashing tape to only uncover a two to three inch dent with a crack in the hull that would allow for water to be taken in. After a few recommendations from some kayak fishing groups I joined I went with plastic welding it using a plastic welding kit I got from Harbor Freight. I first patched the crack itself then I filled in the dent. Gave it a hull test by putting water in it and had no leaks. I actually took it out this past Monday.

So far, I'm only $83 dollars invested in this thing. $10 for the yak, $23 for the plastic welder kit, and about $50 for a new seat. The plastic weld looks ugly but its holding so far.

Just ordered new cables for the rudder and few other misc items. Was working on it this weekend when a bolt snapped on the rudder. Luckily it left a good chuck out for me snagged it with some pliers and unscrew the thread within.

Please post pics of that rudder control set up, and let's see who plastic welding was worse lol. Mine def was not eye pleasing and still wouldn't be if you smeared vaseline over your eyes first.

The plastic welding was on a 73 mustang rear interior panels. Someone put some bookshelf speakers in. Hack job. We ordered new panels but they didn't fit. Used the plastic to make patches. The fun part was trying to get the texture blended.

It's hanging on the wall at the moment. Here's a few shots. You might get what's going on.
I made the rudder and brackets out of some aluminum. The white block was some derlin or phenolic I had. The white wheels were from a laundry line pulley. I had to buy the foot sliders.
The outer string is run along the rim to the front. Pull one string and it deploys the rudder, pull the other side and it stows.
There is stainless cables that came with the pedal kit. They run internal. Quite adjustable.

That is some nice work there for a DIY set up. How do you switch from person 1 to person 2 or vice versa to control the rudder or they both linked and if either person slides their pedal the rudder moves?

I only have the one sliders set. So yeah, I have to swap the pedal rails. Front to rear. Couple screws so its not hard. The cable i made is to accommodate for dual control but I haven't got a second set of sliders. Plastic clip as seen in the pic can disconnect either so you not fighting over the rudder
