So, about two weeks ago I came across a FB marketplace ad for a $10 kayak. At first I thought perhaps it was a mistake or a bait price or if was correct that the kayak would just be completely wrecked. Ad confirmed there was damage on the underneath of the hull but it did not show or clarify the extent of the damage. I figured, it was only 45 minutes away and was just $10 and I really wanted an upgraded kayak. Msg the seller who was this girl at Texas AM selling it for her dad and mom who don't use FB. Agreed on a time to meet the following day. Got a late start after work and arrived there after sunset and forgot my proper flashlight but remembered I could just make do with my phone's flashlight. I arrived and the kayak was out in the front yard, and I was greeted by the girl's mother. I had her show me where the damage was but the entire area near the damage was covered by flashing tape. I buy it and drive off after a nice conversation with the mother.
Two days later I begin examining the damage. I removed the flashing tape to only uncover a two to three inch dent with a crack in the hull that would allow for water to be taken in. After a few recommendations from some kayak fishing groups I joined I went with plastic welding it using a plastic welding kit I got from Harbor Freight. I first patched the crack itself then I filled in the dent. Gave it a hull test by putting water in it and had no leaks. I actually took it out this past Monday.
So far, I'm only $83 dollars invested in this thing. $10 for the yak, $23 for the plastic welder kit, and about $50 for a new seat. The plastic weld looks ugly but its holding so far.
