1 man 6x6

So it was decided in the poll from the users on this site that the project for me would be a "1 man 6x6":thumbsup:

I have been thinking about it a little and I know that I want it 49"s wide MAX so I can run it on the ORV trails and no longer than 7'.

I will use a transaxle from a garden tractor with hydraulic brake steering.I most likely will have a seperate secondary foot operated brake with park.
The transaxle I have in mind is a 2-speed with nuetral and reverse.(I have 3 of these laying around)

The engine will be one of the many vertical shaft electric start 10-14HP engines I have around here.
(I'm saving the 18HP twin for my 6 wheel tractor project:D)

The fenders will be tandem trailer fenders and should work well.
I like this style of fender although I will have to trim the ends I think.



The tires are going to be these I hope.(18X7.00-7)


I will start gathering the other needed parts so I can start on it soon but I doubt it will be much of anything for atleast 4-6 weeks.

Very cool! (and I didn't fudge the numbers! lol) I look forward to this build- Something like an Argo or a PTV has been on my "gonna build one, one day" list for quite some time.

Since I never have enough time, I guess I'm gonna live vicariously through you! Whatever you do, don't forget the winch...

Doing some crude measuring I see I need about 48" max for me to be able to sit down with my legs flat so I should be able to get it under 7' overall pretty easy.

I'll have to decide if it will have a steering wheel or just two levers linked together so the middle will be open for easy in/out access.

The fenders are 9" wide so that leaves me a whopping 30" for the axles/chains/sprockets/brakes so space overall looks plentiful.

At best I'll make some crude drawings to work out some details but for the most part it will be as-built.:rolleyes3:

I hadnt thought about a winch but I do have a HF cheapo sitting on the bench that I could mount up to it along with the onboard 12V air compressor and one extra tire just in case.
I'll probably stick the fuel & tool I have on it some where as well.

I have the urge to start digging the few parts out that I have but dinner is almost ready and being christmas and all.
Monday I'll get two of the transaxles out and pick the best one and look for the gas tank I'm thinking about for it, I may even tear down another tractor or two for more parts.


Question: will a torque converter work in the vertical shaft position?
(just thinking-I'd have to check rotations first-after thinking about it for a minute I doubt it would work)

2 speed trans with reverse and a TC would really be nice along with the electric start and lights and all though.


EDIT:
This is a fuel & tool from blitz.(this is not mine but mine is like it)


I have two and one is bolted to the front of my blastard and it is nice knowing I have 1.5 gallons of extra fuel when out riding and there is a storage space under the fuel tank for stuff.

I see no reason why a torque converter wouldn't work turned 90* as long as its secured to the shafts to keep the alignment. I believe (99% sure) you can also run them in a CW direction if you flip the spring and reverse the cam on the driven.

That little fuel-tool thing is pretty sweet! I may have to make myself one of those for my mini buggy once I finish it.

I'll do some more research on the TC to be sure before buying it.

I run a bungie cord cord through the handle of mine for added security , I dont want that fuel flying off into me when riding.

I need to take a picture of that but its locked up in the trailer right now.

The thing about the transaxle set up I'll be using is the engine will be a vertical shaft so the drive clutch will be under the engine but the driven clutch will be on the top of the transaxle so the two units will be flip-flopped.

It doesnt matter right now anyway but I'll have to decide later on at some point.

I havnt been to that site in a long time but I will no doubt spend some time on there over the next few months.
Doing some quick reading on that site they dont think a tractor transaxle will hold up to the abuse but my target top speed will be 25-30mph so we'll see.

I have been clearing out a space in my garage to start this project and have been thinking of how I want to do the basic chassis build which is looking like a tube frame for the most part.

I think the steering will be two levers that slide front and back on linear bearings and link together so if you move one both will move.This will allow me to put the brake master cylinders behind the seat.I'm thinking spring loaded so they return to nuetral.

The other obstacle is the axles and I really want to use bearinged wheel hubs bolted to the frame to support the axles and then have a wheel hub secured to the axle.
It would just make it easy to do and maintain and while expensive it really isnt much more than just making it all but it sure would be much easier and accurate.

I'm hoping I can make mine a bit more compact and I'll go ahead and use a tractor transaxle since I do have a lot of them around here.

I dont know if it will hold up but all I can do is try it.

I had thought of having the middle tires set a little lower, I may just drill two sets of holes so I can try both ways.

Perhaps you can de-stress the tractor trans by using it indirectly. Rather than use it for an actual axle with wheels mounted to it, perhaps just put a sprocket on each end and use it to drive the system that way?

I have NO experience with such a vehicle- is 30 MPH too ambitious?

Do you plan to make it amphibious?

Having the transaxle tucked up out of the way and linked to the rear tire drive axles with chains is most likely the way it will go unless I make axle extenders.Sadly after looking at engine and transaxle I see using a TAV will be difficult as I want to keep it compact.
I dont know if a chain clutch will take the abuse but its what I need to keep it all tight in a small space.

It will NOT float, not even going to go there on this one.

The speed of 30 would be the max I'd want it to go I'm more concerned with how it climbs small hills and fallen trees than trying to break any land-speed records.:D

I tore into this tractor today because I think I'll use this engine and I was hoping it was the one with the two speed transaxle but its not, I think that one is out back, I'll have to find it.



Those rear tires are slightly larger than the ones I want to buy for it and are only 36" wide and I'm shooting for 48-49" wide max.

I have two other tractors I want to tear apart for parts and to just get them out of my way.I'm hoping to round up 6 tires like those from this tractor and do a mock up of things.(engine/transaxle/tires)

OK well this project is going to also be my OMB-BBO project, I dont expect to win but if I finish it I'll have a fun toy.


I got some materials today for the frame but I wont have muc done until I can get all the hubs and axles here which will be atleast two weeks.

AH-HA! I was wondering how you'd have time for both builds!!!

Wait a minute- I was checking out the contest- isn't it supposed to be "in the spirit of a minbike"? How you gonna get around that one?

BTW- Way cooler than any minibike...

For me the spirit of minibikes goes back to before they were mass produced and were made by a dad and his son mostly, in their garage using whatever they could get their hands on.

No it wont be a minibke but it will be fun and because I dont expect to win or really care about winning as much as just getting a fun project done.

I wanted to do the minibike project I have but I seen several very similar to it and decided to just focus on the 6X6.

I just wish I had more of the parts I need on hand mainly the hubs I'll bolt to the frame to hold the axles in place.
I may still have to make them instead.
