    HF 13hp - Can I use a centrifugal clutch?

I've found a Comet centrifugal clutch with a 1" bore that should work on my 13hp clone with #40 chain, but I also read on GoKartSupply that you shouldn't use a centrifugal clutch on anything over a certain HP level, I think it was 8hp or something. Are they just looking for more sales and I can...

    twin 5hp briggs

I agree that in extreme circumstances (loose sand/gravel, unloaded front end), uneven power distribution between the rear wheels could cause a kart to turn more or less than intended. However, how often does a situation like you described happen? A lack of front-end traction isn't all that...

    twin 5hp briggs

I agree that a live axle would be better, but even if each engine powered its own wheel, the front tires being in contact with the ground will keep the kart from drifting or flipping, just like with karts that have the engine driving only one wheel (non-rotating axle). Take the front wheels off...

Towing a 100lb trailer adds a bit to the strenuousness of it, though.

My first shot at making a go kart and beginning welding

I totally understand the money issues! As a point of clarification, however, most wire-feed welders that use flux-core wire can be upgraded to MIG (metal inert gas) with the addition of a conversion kit. No need to buy the entire welder. The kit just consists of a gauge set and a hose. Then...

My first shot at making a go kart and beginning welding

See if you can afford to upgrade to true MIG welder rather than the flux-core stuff. Quite a bit cleaner, and all around better! Some low-end wire-feeds can't be converted, though.

Yeah, live axle, no jackshaft (orient the engines the same way, each running its own dedicated sprocket attached to the axle), and have at it! You won't get double the power because the engines will work against each other a little bit, but you'll definitely get a lot more power than just one...

New Bicycle Trailer with Honda Clone

Fantastic project, thanks for the details! Have you had any troubles since it's now a motorized vehicle? Or have you addressed them all with signals, lights, and a horn?

Yes, I knew it was risky to ***-u-me anything, but I had to take that chance. Thanks for the chain type confirmation.

ZnsaneRyder, do you have a thread for this build-up or an explanation of your ride? I'm extremely curious about it but don't want to hijack this thread.

Ahh, so you play with different sprockets on the jackshaft, giving different ratios to the live axle. Got it. I was thinking the jackshaft had the same driven and drive sprockets. Makes sense! Thanks. By the way, there's a 40 and a 54 stamped on the axle sprocket. It's got 54 teeth, so can...

    Harness

Most definitely. I guess you need to consider the construction of the kart, the use, the speeds, the other safety equipment, and your driving and make a decision. I'm all for being safe, but every driver needs to decide how far they're going to take it. A full harness would be nice, but will...

    Harness

If you've got a cage, I'd get a rear-center seat lap belt out of an older car ('60s through '80s) at a junkyard. 99% chance they've rarely been used, they're non-self-retracting, they're adjustable, reliable, and typically they just mount with a bolt threaded into a welded "nut" on the floor...

Awesome job for your first kart! One question, though. Isn't it awfully low to the ground under the seat? Looks like it has about one inch of clearance. Low is good for pavement operation, but no doubt you'll need to get into a driveway or something, and you'll bottom out. Also, the frame...

New Kart Project - Seeking Engine Advice

Great post! Thanks so much for taking the time. Makes sense. Is there a reason to have a jackshaft if you don't have a torque converter? If a 6.5hp would likely get me the speed I want but not the acceleration, I could bump up to Worldaire 11hp or HF 11hp or 13hp and gear a little taller to...

What's the jackshaft's purpose? I've only seen it referenced in discussions of torque converters. Would you think the mounts shown in the picture below were for a jackshaft?

    clones

Pardon my ignorance....what's a "stock clone"? I've seen references to copy-cat versions of Honda engines, is it something like that? For $100-ish, I interested!

Hmmm, that would simplify the design. What do people typically use for springs and shocks? I'll have to poke around and find some examples.
