    My Off Road Kart project

The newer 3800's pretty much have bullet proof bottom ends. I'm putting a supercharged 3800 from a Riviera in an 88 Fiero. I'd love to put one in something else that is rwd, but the Fieros hook up pretty good since all the weight is in the back

Did some more work to the mowkart today. Got all the wiring pretty much done except for headlights. I don't have any sockets for the headlights so I might just add them later. I just have a push button start, a switch to kill spark and a switch to activate the fuel shutoff solenoid. I need a 3"...

I like the grenade shift knob, haha.

Got the engine fired up today. I did a little chopping and welding today and pretty much came to the conclusion that all I have is a lawn mower with a lowered seat, haha. Anyway here's a few pics of what its looking like so far. I think I have all the wiring figured out now. I'm...

Yep, that's what the starter solenoid is for. I'm having trouble with the solenoid on the bottom of the carb. Apparently it shuts off fuel when the ignition is off, so I don't know how it is killing the spark.

I just found this article, explaining the purpose of the solenoid. Now I have to figure out why it is killing spark, unless the yellow wire being fed voltage was somehow doing it. The anti-after fire solenoid is a device that shuts OFF the fuel at the carburetor to prevent the engine from...

I bought a 6.5" pulley for the engine and a 5" for the transaxle. The engine pulley has a weld on hub, so I tack welded it in case I want to change pulleys later. The frame cracked when I bolted the transaxle to it. I welded it up and welded the washers onto the frame to strengthen it up...

Haven't been able to mess with this in the last few days, but I did get the clutch system set back up today. I need to find some new pulleys before I install the transaxle and engine. It will probably be a bit of work to get the engine pulley spaced how I need it to be, but once I do that, I...

I never would of thought that corn head grease would create such a discussion.... haha. I've got a good spot to work on my mow-kart now, so I'm going to start re-assembling everything to see if I can make things work. I need to find some new pulleys for the transmission and the engine, and get...

You got it. The grease is much thinner than typical wheel bearing grease, and as I mentioned gets thinner once it's warmed up. I think it would work just fine, since it's used in higher speed gearboxes, but may use gear oil anyway.

I guess I can use gear oil since I haven't filled it with grease yet. My idea was to pump it about half full of grease, so I wouldn't think it would cause any problems. Do you think the transaxle is strong enough to hold up for a gokart? I doubt it would ever go over 30 mph at the most where I...

Installed a vent and a few grease zerks. The vent is just pipethread, so I can remove it and screw in a grease zerk anytime I need to pump grease into it. I decided to go with regular grease for the axles, and John Deere orn head grease for the gears. My dad had some in the shop and told me that...

The spider gears are the smaller gears in the differential. The ones I am talking about are the gears you engage when you pick 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc. I'm just not sure what you call them lol. I suppose I could install a disc brake on the axles. That would probably be the most reliable brake I...

I cracked open the transmission today and took quite a few pics. To see them all, follow this link: http://s143.photobucket.com/albums/r148/toadson/gokart/transmission/ Outside shot from the top The axles are 3/4" This is the top half: Lower half: Unfortunately, the axle rides on...

Thanks for the links! If I do take it apart, I will try to snap some pics for you. I believe that the clutch set up on the mower was just a way to relieve tension off of the drive belt, so it would be slipping. It works for mowers just fine, but I don't know how well it would work on a go kart...
