Hi Landuse
The walk has been postponed until 10 March to give the Council time to process the permit. We start at Kreefte Baai beach, Blaauwberg at 11h00.
Hi Jake.B
The materials and the components cost about 7000 US but we wasted a lot of cash on ideas that did not work. My next build will...
Picture of frame
Thanks chaps.
The tubes are stainless steel and very difficult to shape so we had the bending work done for us by an engineering company. My son likes the shape of the Ariel Atom and this was our design inspiration. I have attached a better picture of the frame, in the...
Scarab body panels
Hi
Progress is picking up after a bit of inactivity. The mudguards and the nose cone have received their paint and their graphics are now ready to fit. Testing of the car to begin any day now....
Hi landuse
Thanks.Other gadgets I haven't spoken about include a headrest with fingers that cradle his neck and his head. They are malleable and wrap around to provide lateral support. I am also putting a hooter under the nose cone which will be attached to a piece of cord and a pull-to-make...
Newspaper article about the Scarab electric car
Hello everyone
Thanks for the kudos. We set out to make a wheelchair in the shape of a go-kart that would give my son off-road mobility well into his adult life and therefore we gave it everything. In my situation I am sure you guys would have...

Hi
We are nearly finished wiring the beast and initial test drives show that the motors will easily carry the cart over rocks and logs and bumps of all kinds. Its getting exciting!
Hi Landuse
I got the motors from Monster Scooter Parts in the US. They cost me $125 each in Feb this year and about $75 shipping and then R400 for customs. I checked recently and the unit price is now over $230 Glad I bought when I did. Nice to see someone from SA on the forum!
Cheers
Scarab progress
Hi Huklebuk
Thanks for the interest.
We are making slow progress. This weekend I finished making a fibreglass mould for the nose cone. The cone hides the suspension turret and houses the RC receiver and the actuator for the steering rack. I am going to install the gauge from...
Hi toystory
Thanks for the kind words and yes we are doing all of the fabrication ourselves apart from the tube bending, this we subbed out to an engineering firm. Inspiration for the shape came from the Arial Atom.
We are busy with a nose cone and the mudguards. Attached is a vacuum forming...
Power & safety
Hi
Thanks for your concern for my young one and I agree in principle but our situation is different.
My son uses an electric wheelchair to get around. The problem is that the chair does not do well on the beach or at camp sites or river beds.
I looked at buying him an off-road...
Hi
Yes differential steering on the back wheels and a server to operate the steering rack in the front.
The motors spin at 2600rpm and we have used 10:1 reduction gearboxes with 90 degree outputs. A shaft and a nylon coupler connects the motor to the gearbox.
We reckon the top speed will be...
