I'm considering buying a used frame from craigslist, and the seller says its not in the best shape and has a few rust spots. Would it be acceptable (safe, not take away performance) to cut out the spots with rust and replace with with new steel tubing...

Oh my god it is a dead axle :O I hadn't even noticed. If I wanted to switch it I just need to find a new one that fits the hangers right? And I don't mind it not having an engine or anything because I already have a clone to put in it

Okay and also the seller said overall pretty good condition, with a few spots with slight surface rust. Is this something to be concerned about?

Towards Cole, I had looked at that engine but it would require me to use the 40 series torque converter which is quite a bit more

So the torque converter would drive the jackshaft, which would have another sprocket on it, which then would drive the rear axle? If that is correct, what would you think about a 10 tooth sprocket on the jackshaft, attached to a 60 tooth on on the axle? I figure since it has a torque converter...
