I've never done it myself but to avaoid cutting at the whole 'single wheel drive' rear end, You could have both rear wheels with sporckets, have an 'axle' running the length of the kart with chain coming of either end connected to each wheels and have the engine inbetween, spnning both wheels, therefore giving you a live axle.

Refer to the "Photo Gallery & Project Log" section and look for the thread "My off road Kart Project". I converted a single wheel belt drive concession kart to a live axle.

on my kart i used tracter pins on snowblower wheels that go throuhg the end of the axle and when u go on pavemen u jus take one out an on dirt an stuff put bolth in works great i jus used a random pice of pipe for an axle with short bieces of 3/4 inch stock in each end. It was free. But bearings wont fit pipe like stock does because they are dimensioned different so pipe has to be just right. or u cold spend some money on a good piece of stock and work from thier. Ive found an awsome place to get bearings and axles an stuff is fastenal fastenal.com fastenal.com is pretty good place to get pillow blocks an stuff
once u get the live axle an pillow blocks er watevr u can mount wheels an interloks an stuff an thats just a non welders point of view

soory for not being here the past couple of days but im here now thanks for all the great replies i was wondering if i could leave the frame the way it is but just put like a piece of box metal on the bottom where the wheels meet now and just put an axle trough it with some pillow bearings and just take off the old whell mounts its hard to explain but i think you get the point if you dont just say it....

Yeah, do that except put a belt going to each wheel instead of a chain so it can slip, and then you have a diff.
