We had 3 employees (out of a staff of 4) quit last week at our Doggy Daycare. One was moving back to Minnesota and had put in a month's notice. The others were afraid they might have to pick up some slack and quit. My wife is 6 months pregnant and I work fulltime on the graveyard shift. Where are all these people looking for work?

My North TX DIYers, hook a brotha up!

Try finding ANY job in Michigan. Do realize this recession BS has been hitting MI hard since 2001 or so, not 2007 like most of the country.

Michigan is in first place (or last place, depending on how you look at it) with an official unemployment rate of 14.6%. And that was the rate released late January for December '09! And it's worse now. Actual unemployment in Michigan is estimated at 25-27%, with Detroit alone approaching 50%. Ain't pretty out there.

I'd speculate (unfairly perhaps) that these folks that quit feel like they are being overworked and or underpaid or they are in a toxic job environment.

Nobody just up and leaves a job they are happy at unless they are being forced to move. (like your MN bound employee)

Well, I've been doing their job for two weeks now, in addition to working my full time job on the graveyard shift, and their job is easy, non-hazzardous if you use common sense and fun! It is busy work though. They had just gotten lazy, apethetic and cut corners in my wife abscence due to severe morning sickness and didn't like being called on it.*

The new staff is picking it up quickly, has a great attitude and the place looks better than it ever has. Old customers have returned and yesterday we were nearly full to capacity! So it was a good thing they quit, I'm just ready to go back to working one job and sleeping again!

Cant say its much better for unemployment in Texas... as a recent college graduate several of my friends who graduated with me are joining the military. I am considering it as well, it would get me out of this job market for the time being, heh.

I shouldn't have poked fun at the unemplyment rate, it is a serious problem. But ****, it's hard to find good help! Most folks aren't looking for work, their looking for a bankers' job!

Just look at craigslist resumes sometime. "just give me 1 chance...between the hours of 8:30ish and 2:15ish. I'll work from home to make up hours"

that's one problem we had with the old staff, refusing to work their assigned schedules.

I'm working at the shop and making due, but I dont have a poor resume but even school districts are making cutbacks, halfway through school I changed my major because it looked safe to go into teaching.

There are jobs out there... there are tons of jobs for people with some computer knowledge willing to sit at a desk and do data entry for 35 a year for the rest of their life, you're right, people only want to work the fantastic jobs and then complain when the government isnt giving them the job they want or free money like they "deserve". I hate to quote a movie on this one but Jack said it best at the beginning of the departed... "no one is going to give it to you, you have to take it" and no, i'm not being racist on that one, those of you who have seen the movie :p
