The Toyota 4A-GE is probably the best all around from a rational objective standpoint. Naturally aspirated it makes 100hp per liter and is reliable as hell. (to match this feat a 454 would have to make over 740hp- in stock configuration!) It was avialable in one form or another for 15 years in both naturally aspirated and forced induction variants, mounted both transverse and longitudnal for front and rear wheel drive applications. Some of the racing versions made over 250hp all from this incredible little 1.6 liter four banger.

Facts aside my personal favorite is the 2.3 liter Volvo redblock. Those engines just go and go and go forever. My dd is an old 940 turbo wagon with 185k miles on it and it still goes like stink and is very reliable. The same can be said for the other Volvos I've owned with this engine. The cons are that it weighs a friggin ton and only has a primitive 8 valves per cylinder which makes it a tractor motor for all practical purposes. That being said it is a marvelous achievement to make an engine that has that kind of reliability and staying power.

try compairing tourqe now.. hp means NOTHING unless it has the toruqe that you can take advantage of the gearing in the car.

If you've ever been in a Locost with a 4age engine, especially a 20 valve, you'll realise that in such a light car the 4age has more than enough torque.

You do know that hp is just torque x rpm? So high HP just means (relatively) high torque at high revs

in theory it is. but in practice if that was true my engine in my truck would be higher horse power then tourqe... which tourqe is 250 ish while hp is only like 160

I would say my favorite engine would be a 318 or a 383 magnum, the 318 for its humble power. and the 383 for its awesomeness. spekaing of 318. thats what is in my truck, what performance stuff should I put on that?

A bigass blower? Along with forged internals and the biggest cam and valves you can pack in there.

My Peugeot 505 has 600k+ kms on it and its never had the head off, still runs like new :) .

As for my favourite engines, there's the Napier Cub

The 160cc Victa 2 stroke

JAP 302 aircooled V8

You're kidding right? Want me to compare torque output per liter? Umm, OK, if you say so. The same 454 I mentioned would have to make 552 ft. lbs of torque to match the torque per liter of a stock, naturally aspirated production 4AGE engine. The EFI version of the Chevy 454 put in their trucks all through the 1990s (same era as the 4age) only made around 400ft. lbs. of torque, considerably less. That's a fair, unbiased stock to stock comparison. (4AGE=75ft/bls of tq per liter of displacement vs. 454=55ft/lbs of tq per liter of displacement)

Comparing a chevy big block to a 4age is a bit rediculous. I'm know Toyota lover, but you can't argue that the 4age was one of the best engines of all time from a tecnological/performance per liter perspective. They are also dead reliable and last forever.
