Increase Throttle Cable Travel?

Hey friends,

Almost done with my golf cart build. Wanted to know if there a way to increase throttle travel? The distance from idle to full throttle is very short. I’d like to be able to use 75% of the gas pedal’s travel but I have no idea how to increase the distance the cable throttle travels.

I have a governed 420.

On the gas pedal, you want the cable attachment point closer to the pivot point of the pedal. That will make more pedal travel but less cable travel.

-But lets see pictures first.

Another option is use a spring somewhere, either between the pedal and cable or cable and throttle linkage. This would be my backup plan, not ideal.

Here are the pics. the Aluminum contraption is just what I had set up to test drive. 1st pic is the linkage that connects to the pedal. 2nd pic is the pedal fully floored. 3rd pic is underneath the cart.

This is the visualization I needed. Thank you. I‘d need to do some measurements and a little math if I wanted to identify the perfect pivot point but I can even estimate and be in a better place. Glad I asked! And it looks like mine should be the opposite, right? Having the pivot closer to the throttle side since I want longer pedal travel for the shorter throttle travel.

The actuating rod that goes under the seat pushes rearward as the gas pedal is depressed. I made the mechanism to change that to a pulling motion to attach the throttle cable to.

I’m dealing with this on a chainsaw carburetor and it is tough.

Just a little lever to pull on the chainsaw with your fingers there is almost zero throw from idle to wide open.

The opposite on slide carburetors the slide has lots of throw up/down if your not setup right you can have lots of pedal throw and still not even reach wide open throttle.

i’ve read through this all and still don’t know what I’m going to do yet…

Thanks for the photos. Golf carts are not a staple on this site so it is a rare look into a throttle linkage from a sort of heavy-use, professional vehicle that is still very go kart-ish. Be interesting to see a factory schematic drawing to clarify the throttle assembly. ..or a video or animation showing how it moves.

It's not complicated. The armature that goes from pedal to rear of cart moves rearward as you depress the pedal. That motion is typically the opposite of what an intelligent human being needs for a small engine.

So it's better to be lucky than good apparently. Pics added. I started thinking about positioning/location once you all gave the fulcrum/pivot advice. Then I found a spot with a little stud on it. I apparently already drilled a hole for the metal end of the throttle cable (part that holds the nuts) and there was a little metal piece where the throttle cable end fit over perfectly. Then I thought if I could find the right nut to hold it down that I'd probably be in business. Unfortunately upon further inspection there were no threads. While I was racking my brain thinking about clamps or ways to secure it down, I inspected further to see there was a tiny hole drilled through this stud. Picked out a little cotter pin that fit perfectly!
