Burning oil? The question is, is it burning any gas? Did you put gas in the crankcase and oil in the gas tank? Come on now, fess up.

I always blame it on user error because with a little care and maintenance (what the #@*s is that?!) a Briggs will last as long as any other. Still running a 2001 Yahhdd Musheens wiv originyl enjun that gets used for an hour every week (7-10 days) in the summer. Wish every riding mower had an hour meter installed from the factory but I can probably calculate the total engine hours to within +/- 5hrs.

While l don't disagree about the older engines. Briggs has built some junk in recent years. This wasn't an expensive engine, ya get what ya pay for and all that BS. l get that. I got it cheap enough and l'm ok with it. apparantly disposable engines are coming to a mower near you. What else do you call an engine that has no cylinder liner, (raw alumunum bore)", no drain plug, no throttle, no kill switch. The carburator is behind a tamperproof plastic "vault".

2 years? Maybe 20 hours. Remember the Mt.Top Lab is in Oregon.There are only 2 seeasons, wet and dry. Dry season is 90 days. The mower has no snorkel, so no mowin in the wet. So it shouldn't be worn out. This post was for enternatnment purposes mostly. Still not a briggs fan, there was that 8 hp also.....

Ohh it's one of those maintenance free engines. On some, you cannot even add oil. I think Taryl covered one of those.
Since you started this thread, I think you should see it through to the bitter end. Do an autopsy on its live corpse. I want to see the bore and the rings....
As B&S has proven, a "raw aluminum bore" is viable but maybe that was in the 1970s only and they have since lost their mojo? I like the new engine on an old deck idea but I would surely avoid a maintenance free engine such as yours. I'd go Chinese!

Have you tried adding a little Restore or Motor Honey to the oil? Bet it’d clear that little bit of smoke right up.

That mower is a 1974 model. Cast aluminum deck. This is the 5th engine thats on it.
I like it cuz it is pure. No safety shyt at all.
No blade brake, ignition interlock, seat belts, or warning stickers. Amazing that l survived all those years behind it!
