I got this race kart frame and painted it, and I also have an axle for it, but the mounting plate goes where the bearing mounts are, and it gets in the way. What should I do? And I'm also not sure what to do for the brake situation because I don't have a welder yetIMG_3411.jpegIMG_3413.jpeg

Make it fit? Modify it to make it fit. Can you take a photo of it installed, or as much as it can be installed, to show the interference?

There's basically nothing you cannot do with the proper tools, so keep that in mind as you build up your tool arsenal.

I will do that

And I am going to get an angle grinder and welder soon

OH YEAH! Mr. Angle Grinder is Mr. Serious. Love those tools, especially after years of using a slow arse drill with an abrasive disc locked into the chuck. Night and day difference with that extra RPM (10,000 plus).

Are the 30-dollar ones from HF decent?

I wore out (with a LOT of use) a $10 Drill Master from HF and am working on the older maroon Chicago Electric brand, both are no longer in their lineup. Sure I would get another from HF, a Bauer or a Hercules, corded only because batteries are gay ....

My problem I think is only having just one, where ideally you'd have two grinders with two different attachments (like one wire wheel and one flap disc) so you're balancing the work load and not stopping to change attachments, but I digress.

I made a really dumb mistake. I was hammering old bearings of the axle as they would not come off, and then I realized that I squished the treads of the axle. I was going to get a new axle anyway as it was very rusted, but is there any way I can fix it?

A die or a thread file. Available at most hardware stores. Or you can grind the mashed threads off. Lots of ways to skin that cat.

Rusty axle? It'll be fine .....unless it is rusting in half.

They're always rusty especially if they're left outside to rot, along with the rest of the karts that we find. Just grind off the rust with the aforementioned grinder + wire wheel and then paint it. I like to paint it like a metallic steel color, giving the illusion it is stainless or something, but it can be body color...

I need to get a thread file too, those are neat. Thanks Canned Monster.

I would the get the "cup style" wire wheel as seen in this pic, but beware, individual wires can launch from the wheel and stick in things, like your legs (or eyeball) but it is usually whatever is in-line with the wheel's rotation, so don't be angle grinding up by your face. Wear eye-pro and wear denim trousers.

And some fancy boots.
Sandles! Be a MAN!!!

Ok more seriously... EYE PROTECTION! EYE PROTECTION! EYE PROTECTION!

When Im grinding or cutting, I wear my welding helmet with the shade removed AND a pair of full coverage, fitted goggles under the mask. Stuff STILL makes its way into the goggles.

Use as much eye pro as you can. You dont want to be trying to Q-tip a piece of metal out of your pupil, desperately trying to avoid an ER visit. Oh man, and when you blink it feels like youre eye is getting ripped out.

You might also repair mashed threads with a set of needle files, specifically the file that has a triangular 🔺 cross section. You run the file back and forth into the damaged threads following the original contour. The file may be too small (won't bite into the metal) and you might need a bigger file (depending on the thread size on the axle) and it could be a lot of work.

Otherwise, this nice short video came up using the thread repair file

I just bought a flux welder at Harbor Freight, and I was welding the mounting plate because the welds were bad. For some reason, all it did was produce spatter, and it made no welds. Does anyone know why?

Bad ground? A failure to follow the destructions (heh) to the letter? Flux welders DO make spatter but that's why you let Mr. Angle Grinder handle the cleanup and maybe a welder's chipping hammer....

This is how we all started! I remember cutting steel with a skil saw with an abrasive wheel. Trying to weld with a yard sale actyl/oxy torch....
You'll get there! Keep buildin & thinkin!
Concentrate on quality work, the rest will fall in place.
