Briggs and Stratton not what yer thinkin. So l scored an old BS 12.5hp vertical shaft engine for$25. It's going to replace the engine in the Naughtagator. The hp upgrade will be nice, but the main reason is LECTRIC START! It's weil used,but it runs sooo nice! Its one ya can tell it will run...

we get nervous when someone wants serious info. We try to distract ya while someone makes up some shyt, er ahh, i mean looks up a believable answer.
There is about 6000 years combined experience here. And thats just a few of the old guys....

awesome! I got the roll cage for this tackes up and mostly welded. I ran out of welding wire. I'll start a build thread for it so it can go down in posterity as a total wreck of a kert rejuvenated.

Looks pretty good. Quick work. Weld in an X brace between the two uprights behind the seat. Also some gussets at the intersections. Not trying to be critical. Looks good, and works good aren't always the same. Though rarely needed, strength = saftey. The cargo on board ( children and grandchildren ) are pretty important stuff.

I am considering the x brace. there were solid lugs on the frame where the old cage bolted in. looked at a little colman kart at TSC Friday and the roll cage on it looked like conduit with no bracing at all and tiny little hardware holding it to the frame. the luggage rack will probably support the back half pretty well when I get it done.

so I have looked at a couple Chinese made go karts. there is minimal triangulation in the roll cages and the tubing is paper thin. I'm not being combative but why is it that a factory made cage out of inferior materials that is bolted together with crummy hardware is better than a homemade one with heavier materials by a certified welder? I will put this roll cage up against any of the cheap china manufactured ones any day. it will no more fold like a cheap suit than anything else on the market in the same class. I'm not building a dune buggy to go 100 mph.

the top blue arrow is the triangulation yet there is a very long section of unsupported tube indicated by second arrow. that tube will do nothing to to triangulate that roll bar. it will fold up.

I don't believe any one in their right mind would make that comparison. The point that is being made is that to do it right ya should triangulate.
That would be the strongest thing you can do, within reason. We all know the chinese stuff is not "best quality". And who ya gonna sue? good luck locating them. They don't give a Da&* what they send out of the country.
We here @ DIYGK on the other hand have high standards. We only try to pass on all the knowledge here. Not knowing what the skill level and /or capabilities of the person seeking said knowledge might be. don't get offended.

not offended at all. just talking thru this. there is a fine line between weight/ vs relative safety as well. I can weld all kind of stuff to this go kart and it will only go 10 mph and if it should tip over well it will be the safest thing out there. I'm a little bit older and I remember a time when the things I did as a kid are not acceptable by today's standards. I remember rolling around in the package shelf of a Chevy Caprice cause we didn't have car seats. I turned out ok I think. maybe I'm not in my right mind?
