My dad is discouraging because he thinks it's a waist of money, especially since I won't do things the way he would. I have a different way of looking at things with a go kart than my dad does.

He thinks of it like I have all the parts to put it together, so why not do that? The teeth is I am always ordering parts and sometimes they are wrong, but I am trying to build it. When I bought it it was hardly a rolling chassis, and I completely rebuilt the chassis before I moved on to the engine. The chassis was the expensive part.

My dad is well aware I've been working on it the past couple of days. Hints me ranting about him not being happy I'm not doing things his way... yeah, I had to deal with him s**t talking it all day.

The only projects of mine he thinks are worthwhile is my trail 90 and my car. There the only ones he thinks will be worth something. The only other thing he doesn't complain about is my motorized bicycle, but that's because he doesn't have to take me places as often.

what's wrong with the way he wants to do it? if what he says isn't gonna work, then do it, and show him. or maybe even ask him to do it, say u don't kw how to do what he says and you need him to show u, he'll see first hand it doesn't work, but you have to sell it though, don't be like "oh ya? why dont u do it?" be like" i dont understand can you just show me real quick?" some people can't tell that they're wrong until they see it physically.

maybe say the bike is too slow and you want to use the kart to go places because its faster and safer,and consumes less (not necessarily true but...theoretically with some mods it could be).

I've offered him to show me what he means, but he never actually does. The last thing he thought was a "cheap and easy fix" was when my uncle busted the welds and also split the jackshaft down the center. I have no clue how that happened but my dad said it's fixable without ordering a new one.

Another time(earlier when I was almost done with the frame) I was going to order a new axle since the old one was bent. He made me spend the same on parts to put new bearings, hubs, sprockets, keys, brakes, and wheels on the one I had instead. I could do literally nothing about this because he had my money and I didn't have my own bank account to order parts, he wanted to order them for me.

This is one reason I don't trust my parents having access to my bank account, I but all my parts with a prepaid visa.

when you paid for all the parts for the axle, did u pay for them?

The jackshaft was spit down the center for about 4 inches along where the keyway was. If I welded it I would have to grind a keyway myself. That's a bunch of work I don't know how to do. I have no clue how it split tho, I wasn't riding it.

The parts did work, and I did pay for them. The thing is I spent over 400 bucks in axle parts whe. I couldnorder a new one for the same price. The old axle also has about a 2 inch off center wobblenon one wheel. Thank God it has suspension.

The wheel sticks out past the side of the kart, I'm pretty sure it was wrecked pretty good because the axle was bent, and the fron suspension was all jacked up on the same side. I fixed the suspension, but I don't want to bend back the axle quite yet.

It's very difficult to true an axle. If it gets bent then it increases sprocket and chain wear, along with messing with bearings and brakes.

It's not got a wobble in the center, it's on the outside past the bearings.

Idk, I think he thought it was cheaper. It was a total pain, I had to surgically cut the bearings off in chunks because of how bad it was rusted, there is even some pitting in spots on the axle.

Hi! My 9-year-old son asks me about karting and I don't know what to tell him. I decided to read about it on the forum, and ask.
Do you think it's too early for a 9 year old to go karting?

We have a lot of parents here. @joshw0000 has fairly young kids, he may be able to help you out. Welcome! Don’t pay a mechanic to work on your kart, you can both learn. After all, we are DIY go karts.

9 year old is perfect. Especially for a boy. My 10 and 12 year old girls are asking me to turn up their karts already. He'll do fine. Just make sure he's safe. If you can find one with seat belts and a roll cage, great. At the very least have him wear a helmet. Something with a 212 motor will be plenty and you can turn it down until he's ready for all it has to offer.

D**n kids. I never did have one! Built the first one at 70 for the grandbrats. Second one is complete and the 3rd is on the drawing board. They keep getting more complex, better and faster.

along time back after bickering back and fourth with my pops about something I knew wouldn’t work on the kart we were both upset.. I just up and said maybe the kart wasn’t worth working on and I should just sell it. He kind of got a sad look on his face and told me to just to the best with what I had. from that moment on I realized he was never trying to make me upset or be around to (hover and annoy)... I built him the top dog kart no one around here could touch and it soon went to him always saying to me (when you gonna get faster) and you need a bigger engine! Man I had that 8 wound out wouldn’t give me no more! It’s realizing you have a project kart and pops is maybe setting there watching tv? And wants to have fun also! Are you two really even angry at each other over the kart itself or is it always the “cost” or Is it the frustration of needing tools you might not have in house? because when I was putting wheel sleeves in the mini scrapper I had a just slightly smaller then 5/8 bolt and my pops was all so what the axle is a bit small the wheel will just wobble a bit? We tried his idea and it did not last five feet. correct axle spacers/bolt and it is rock solid. we were more arguing over the cost of the axle and spacers..

I completely understand you. I've had similar experiences with my dad, I just take it with a grain of salt. He wants me to do things his way, and I know it won't work. At least your dad hasn't cost you any money yet.

Yupp it’s the other way around.. so far I’m the one usually bumming cash.
