It's in the works....I've got to get the kids happily going before I get mine. And I need the entire build to cost a little less than that motor.

If I didn't need a welder, a tractor, etc...

Both are infinitely useful. I went with a cheapo Amazon stick welder for about $100. It's great for thick metal (fixing tractor implements) but any kind of thinner metal (go-karts), not so much. It's even worse if you suck at welding like me.

Welder first. I'll probably need a welder to fix the tractor. Maybe a used 'buzz box' Lincoln or a HF flux core.
Edit: And the tractor probably a Wheel Horse 312-8 or a Sears Suburban.

Vice, not well mounted but there, next time I'm down there I'll see if my late Grandfather had an old quality one, he was a mechanic in the 70's and 80's. I'm sad I never met him, he died of asbestos related cancer. Grinder yep, somewhere. I also have an old Dewalt cordless drill and hex impact, not super strong but it gets most things done.

Is the DeWalt a 18V? If so, you can get an adapter off Amazon for about $15 and use 20V batteries. Just don't leave the battery in the adapter when you're not using it or try to charge a 20V in the 18V adapter (on an 18V charger).

I love this Dewalt set actually, I have 3 batteries (only 2 work properly) and they both got used for years hard in the painting business. I only had trouble removing a mower blade. One day I'll get a Milwaukee fuel impact, a guy at my wood shop has one it's nice.

In this pic, it looks like you need to move that gov spring over.
I measured those holes, years ago, the 1st ones are around 200 rpm increase each, but that last one was 300-400 increase. The gov still works jus fine.

Maybe, I can’t adjust the lash right now, the 9mm isn’t here right now, but soon. It will get hot cycle today or tomorrow. What do you count as a hot cycle? Like number of minutes?

I recommend, turn idle screw in 1 whole turn. Do not let it run under 2500 rpm, for 1st 30 mins. This helps break in the cam and other wear parts. If its gonna wipe a lobe out, it's gonna happen in the 1st 30 mins. Hemis have a lil stronger valve springs then non hemis.
Dont let it set at a steady throttle very long, keep doing up and down rpm. Its governored, so WOT pulls will not hurt it. This will get the rings seated faster. Run it a good hr, longer if you can, get heat in it.

Then tomorrow, after it has cooled down, (cold cycle) check side cover bolts, head bolts, and valve lash again. They will stay after a few hot, cold cycles.

Checking valve lash, often during breakin, will let you know if a lobe is wiping out, and it's usally the exhaust lobe that goes during break in.

I like to use straight 30 weight oil during break in.

I change oil after 1st hr, after 2nd hr and after 3rd hr of run time. There's alot of metal coming out during break in.

I'll have an engine on the test stand for 4 or 5 days for break in.

This is jus my way. Its your engine, you do as you like.

Great tractors, heavy duty transmission and axles, Kohler K series is a beast as you've proven with your karts. It's crazy what these tractors can do with 10HP that modern lawn mowers can't do with 20+. If you can't tell I'm a big fan of attention to detail and craftsmanship. Overbuild beasts these.

hijacked moving on I should of kept the super cheap cub for the 13hp kohler alone. I got a ton of stuff from one seller who was clearing out for his dad. I got a panzer and it has a narrowed cut Plymouth rear end ran through a jackshaft and it’s powered by an 8hp Briggs. This thing has pulled fallen trees in are yard like nothing when the wheel horse struggled. Stuff was so much cooler back then.
