1inch to 3/4 help

hi guys putting together 1st go kart and the only thing stopping is i have a 1inch shaft that i'm going to make a live axel but the tires i'm using have only a 3/4 hole and no bolt holes to use a flange is there anything i could but like a step down or something i could buy i live in canada and only have a princees auto around thanxs in advance

well i got them for free don't want to go out and pay for new one 90% of my gokart came from free parts so be sides the cluth chain and brake 90 bucks is good i think

Cut off the 3/4 parts, drill it out to 1" and weld on 3/4" pipe(as in plumbing).
It what I did and it worked fine. Just a matter of figuring out how to attach them to the axle.

Keyonn - you may only have a princess auto but Northern Tool ships in Canada - you don't
have to worry about customs or anything. TSC same thing

Offhand, I don't, but I might be able to find something around the GTA. You could take a little trip thru your yellow pages, and do some Googleing. Truth is, that might not be all that cost effective. Could you give us a pic of the wheels?

And t0x1c, I'd love to see a pic of your idea, 'cuz I'm just not quite getting it. 3/4" NPT stuff is not exactly high-tolerance stuff...

I'll get a pic tomorrow if I remember.
What I did and it held up very well besides me bending my axle.
I did 3/4" and then welded 1" pipe over it to create almost a 1/4" collar. Then drilled through both the collar and pipe and threaded it to accept a 3/8" fine thread bolt and nut. The tires I had used a metric bearing and the bearing opening was like 2 and some odd fractions ID, so a 1" sae washer fill it and helped to center everything. It was actually very balanced when I had it together.
My mistake was I drilled it on the inside between the tire and bearing, so when I hit a fence post with my tire at close to 20 mph it bent it pretty bad at the spot where I drilled it. Now if I did it on the outside it wouldn't have bent the axle.

Ok, sorry, it was 1" pipe and 1 1/4" pipe.


I figure you can also do this, cut a 1/4" slot into the length of the pipe, put it on the axle, insert the key, then weld the key to the pipe and make a keyed wheel.

Now thats an idea! id just cut the slot in the wheel and weld the pipe over it and slide it on with the keyway in place on the axle. Too bad i already drilled my axles :ack2:
But on the subject of the wheels being too small. Id first go the junk yard and look for wheels that would work with my axle from a lawn tractor. There only like 10$ a pair with tires where i go. Id also consider turning the shaft down myself with a file or grinder

Yeah, my other suggestion was to find a wide file/rasp and just run the engine at full speed and turn the axle down by hand. Probably be faster with a angle grinder, you just need a caliper(see image) to check to accuracy, like on a lathe.

haha i would just get my hands on a whole axel from like a quad with wheels on it and attach it to the frame. Your current idea in theory should work fine though. Good Luck
