MTD motors. No power. Anyone ever uses

I have a couple MTD snowblower motors. I put one on a cart but it has no power to move the car without anyone in it let alone with someone in it. Doesn't appear to want to run at full RPMs. Any advice.

Yes, what is your gear ratio? Tire size? Have you taken apart the carb and cleaned it real well? What kind of drive system are you using, centrifugal clutch or CVT?

Anyway they do the same thing as a predator , honda, or comparable motor.

Ive used the 179cc, 208cc, 208 stroked to 212cc, 357cc, and 420cc MTD snowblower engines with great success.

So I would lean towards a running or gear ratio issue.

What did you do for an exhaust and air cleaner? Is the throttle cable hooked to the hand control lever?
Does it move all the way right, full throttle, until it hits the limit stop screw?

I've had a bunch of MTD stuff
If I recall they all had Briggs or Tecumseh engines.
Does/had they actually made their own?
The snowblowers I had used pulley's right off the engine, no engine mounted gearbox
Is that the case here?

Yes, after tecumseh stopped being competitive and went out of buisness, MTD had a big problem,
no engines for their snowblowers. So they made their own line of honda clone engines manufactured in china ,
probably in the same factory as harbor freight motors.

No reduction or cam reverse drive, but alot of the crankshafts are 7/8in diameter.

They even started putting 547cc singles and 670cc twins on their lawnmowers up until last year,
due to increased tariffs on china engines switched back to kohler and briggs. The snow engines are here to stay tho.

It just doesn't seem when it's on full throttle to be full throttle. I'm going to throw a different motor on the cart tonight. When it's on the stand it just doesn't have any speed or power. It sounds weak and not at full.

I have the throttle cable hooked up to the hand throttle and it does go to full

Okay you answer the problem i put a 1 inch clutch on and it's a 7/8 shaft. Duh so is it possible to get clutches or chart converters for the 7/8 drive?

Look on e-bay there was a guy making them and selling them there. You also may be able to make one your self. Get a piece of 1” thin wall emt conduit and slice out a 1/4” strip down the length and deburr it.

Glad you got it figured out!

Yes the 7/8 shafts are a problem. And they are also 3/16 keyway, not 1/4.

Like denny saids, you can DIY a shim. But 1in bore clutches use a bigger 1/4in keyway.

So if your 1in clutch has an integrated key (male , part of the clutch), you can make/ buy a shim
to adapt the diameter and grind the keyway on the crank wider to fit. It should be tall enough to
still have at least 1/8 in engagement, and with a 3/8 fine thread bolt clamping it down should be just fine!
Ive used this method to run a 30 series 1in bore driver on an mtd engine.

Or if your clutch has a "female" key, you can buy the adapter from ebay that
includes a step key, that has 3/16 width on one end, and 1/4 other.
Will only work if the clutch and crankshaft have female keyways, make sense?

Another option that I mostly use is just to swap the crankshaft , but if you have other motors
that work it may not be an ideal option.
