your lash just needs to be set correctly. Idk what it is for non hemi. someone will let you know and find you. 99.9% sure there are vids on YouTube. Those are rocker arms. the pushrod goes In the cup on each one. then the other end needs to be certain distance from valve this is called lash, say .003" it is adjusted with the hardware in the middle and feeler gauges

On second thought if you didn't touch and get them out of adjustment, just push down on the valve spring and reseat each push rod .

While you fumble through the valley holding your rockers, you can make an incredible mess of things if not careful. Jmaack is correct that your lash should still be set at OEM specs, but "pushing down on the valve spring" is not as simple as it sounds.
The rods popped out from under the "pusher cup" end of the rocker arms when the cam was removed. The arms were always under spring pressure, trying to push the rods down into the engine. At the bottom of the rod there's a lifter an inch or two long that the rod's likewise trying to push into the engine. The lifter is what's contacting and pushing on the lobes of the cam, and so the cam is what stops the rods and lifters from getting pushed down into the engine.
Any time the sidecover comes off, that end of the camshaft is no longer supported by the bearing surface built into the sidecover, so it drops down, pressure comes off of the lifters/pushrods, rods fall out from under rockers, and the rods just get pushed out of the way when the cam is put back in. Bottom line, it's a fine dance trying to get the sidecover back on while the valve springs are still mounted and the rockers are pushing the rods/lifters down onto the cam.
I've never laid a flat blade screwdriver on the bottom edge of the valve valley to use as a prybar to lift up that end of a rocker arm (which would push down on the other end, further compressing the spring as it forces the valve down) so that a pushrod could be popped back into the "pusher cup" of the rocker. That's the only way you're going to be able to compress the valve springs. You wouldn't have to lift the rocker arm more than a fraction of an inch to get the rod under it though. Before you do though, you need to grab each rod and move it up and down (nice and sloppy in there) to "feel" if you're sticking the rod down onto the top of the lifter (shaped like an upside-down T) instead of further down beside it. Only then should you pop up the rocker to get the rod under it.
Where's the lash cap? (Hemi has 2, your non-hemi only has 1.) There should be a tiny upside-down cup just sitting on top of one of the valves. Turned right-side up it would only hold something the size of a Beebee (.177 cal.). If not in place, it could be laying in the valley, or down one of the pushrod passages. Like I said, incredible mess. Watch videos.
