Hi,
I am new to this forum. I am restoring a go kart that has a predator 420cc engine. The go kart originally had a 212 but I decided to upgrade to a 420. My issue is the old brake system is shot and I thought that I am going to need a bigger brake kit for the bigger engine. Do you guys have any recommendations?
Thank you y'all

I keep reading over your op to find what break system it has but I don't see it. Could you elaborate and maybe share some pics?

I'm gonna go ahead and let you know what others are sure to weigh in on soon. If you're going to go with a 420cc which has 13hp stock from a 212cc which has 6.5hp stock, and if it has a torque converter, you're also going to need to upgrade it to a 40series as well. If it has one, it's likely a 30 series and it's not going to be enough for that much HP.

Totally guessing and speculating with out more details and some pics though!

I have a 420 on my kart with a 40 series converter. I put a wilwood hydraulic system on mine. The key to this system is you need the thicker 1/8" disk. They're tough to bleed but once you get that done they'll stop your kart pretty good. I actually wish I would have put 2 on the rear axle. That motor and torque converter make alot of power even in stock form.

That the Wilwood SC1 brake caliper? If so, which master cylinder did you get for that.

If a single disk locks up the wheels then adding another disc brake ain’t gonna make it stop any better. Adding front brakes might though, but will involve machining, welding and fabrication.

I always assumed I just had not come across it yet.. so are you telling me nobody's put brakes on the front yet?

I single disk struggles to lock up 18" wheels. Just like a centrifugal clutch struggles to move 18" wheels.

My dingo factory had a band brake and 22x11x8 tires and would lock them up all day long. Some race karts and a few smaller buggies do have front brakes.

Not very easy to add front brakes, not very many options for wheel hub setups for front brakes. It's either try to adapt what's available (usually racing) or custom make hubs to adapt for a disc brake.

Sounds like an issue with your setup.

I have a heavier 674cc V-twin kart with master/ caliper from a 90's kaw dirt bike, 20 in tires with 1 1/4 live axle.

Looks like we have the same exact rotor, but I can lock up the tires at 20+mph on pavement, it's how I turn it around in the street.

I even held the brake and gas down to spool the turbo, then let off to launch it, no worries.
Do not underestimate band brakes. They do work good.
Right! When set up right can be effective , but do not compare to hydraulic disk.
They're tough to bleed
Not if you know what your doing, I just used a large syringe (from the last turkey fry), push it in, hook a hose
from it to the bleeder, crack then pull it out. Bled.
