What about the clutch smoking.
Clutch should never ever smoke. Indicates severe overload.
Once this happens, springs lose their temper. Clutch will never be right.
My clutches never get so hot that I can't handle them.
also if i raise the back wheels when it is idling it spins
Normal.

Tell us how many teeth are on your axle sprocket! that could be the problem!

Coming off a pressure washer shouldnt do anything.

I will have to count the teeth tonight. i am at work and the go cart is at home. i will count them tonight. i can tell you it is an old 2 seater carter go cart. The ones that were low to the ground and did not have roll bars

Thats not too high of a ratio, I would try a 60-70t axle sprocket, top speed will go down, acceleration will go up. What kind of clutch are you using (brand)?

Its a comet clutch. but i have to buy a new one because the kart will move when i start it. i would rather have more tourque than top end. This us for a seven year old. I really want to put a TC on it but I do not have the funds right now.

Does it look like this one? I have that one on my kart, horrible clutch. Its a comet, it slips way too much, gets very hot even when its not slipping, and after the second time i used it it started to engage at idle.

(sorry for bad picture quality)

Thats it. Also does any one have an idea what the diameter of the 54t sprocket for the carter kart would be. i am going to buy a larger one today. what would be the best size? 72 or 60t

So i bought a t 72t sprocket and the guy said if it does not give me good combo of speed and torque he would exchange it for a 60t. He also said the 13 inch tires were to big for the go cart. Is that true?

13" tires are of average size. My friend drives 22's in the back and his cart goes fine with the exact ratio that you have (10t/54t).

I'm going to be driving 18"s with 10/60t ratio.

I think that you will like the added acceleration of the 72t sprocket.

Speed chart says it will go about 20 at 3600rpm. The governor is still intact so i can make it faster. What about exhaust/muffler? Does that effect speed? I am starting to wonder if this is for my son or me.

Exhaust will not affect redline on a governed engine, but it will increase power a little. The only thing to get you above 3600rpms is taking off the governor, then from there you can upgrade valve springs, rod, flywheel, etc to get more rpm.

your tires are too big for your gear ratio. either get smaller tires or bigger axle sprocket. also check your compression. if thats no good nothing will help it

Can anyone explain to me how you put a TQ on the engine? i realize there are 2 pullys but i am confused on how you hook it to the sprocket

If you get a TAV you just bolt the mounting plate to the engine, then run a chain from the sprocket on the secondary clutch (pulley not mounted on engine) to the axle. If your running a non TAV style torque converter, you just have the secondary clutch on a jackshaft which has a sprocket going to the axle.

So a tav style slips on the motor shaft and the secondary pully is on a plate off to the side, connected by a belt. On the sec pully you connect it to the sprocket with a chain
