Clutch drum brake

I have a buddy who has seemed my advice about fitting a better brake on his sons kart. I dont know the make/model but it has seriously limited axle space because it has an enclosed axle. It currently has the tire paddle friction brakes and they are just not suitable. Enter this thread

Ya, I run a dual brake setup on my one bike.... Clutch brake and a disc on the rear...
As long as you dont rely on it as primary braking device. Use the scrub to slow down considerably, then stop with the clutch band brake.

Also get a band that fits the clutch drum well...

He would use it was the primary brake with the scrub brakes as a backup because the scrub brakes dont work very well at all. So it's a no go?

if this is a dead axle kart just bolt a drum to the sprocket like the later Manco 405 has, and ditch the scrub brakes

Well one could add a rubber shoe to the paddle, or even a piece of wood...
Increasing leverage on the linkage helps..

It's not so much that it's a no go... It'll work.. But it's alot of stress on the clutch and chain...

I really wish I had a picture for you guys but I dont have the kart and my buddy doesnt want to send pictures. It makes life hard. It is a live axle. And the way it is set up it is..... interesting. I couldn't even find a similar kart on google.

Edit: it looks like a bird/Phoenix engineering cart, but I cant confirm that that is the exact origin. It just looks like that

I was unclear. He doesnt have the kart at his house. His father in law keeps it at his house because he has space to ride.he just doesnt want to make a special trip out there for a few pictures.

I have a clutch drum brake on two of my mini bikes as a second braking system, and they work great. But remember if your chain comes off that brake system fails. That's why I have a second brake system. Although I'm not sure how you could make this work as a second braking system on this go-kart. However I think it can be done . Good luck.
