Hello I’ve been looking but am having trouble finding an answer. I have a predator 420, with a comet 40 clone, and am putting it in a small quad with 18” tire(I read that any thing over 15” is a no no) I’m wondering how many teeth I need on the back sprocket to be able to have fun on mild off road/hilly terrain and still be able to achieve 60/70 mph with out burning up the clutch. Is this possible? Should I get smaller tiers? If some one can help me or link me in the right direction that be great thanx.

Uhmmmm, no.
That is not possible with any reasonable mod level of a 420.
Even with a TC, you have to make trade offs in gearing.
With TCs, you can change the TC sprocket, and I think most are within the 9-12T range.
I think with a 10 or 9T TC sprocket, a 70T+ axle sprocket should do enough off roading power for you. That's just a guesstimating ballpark guess, but anywhere from 70-80T on the axle sprocket probably.
Oh yeah, and 60-70 MPH is INCREDIBLY DANGEROUS!!
That quad was never meant to go on the freeway.

Not happening lol.

I've got a 420 with a 40 series and 10T drive to 60T axle it, 18" tires. It will do 30mph fairly easy. I think I could probably go to 55 or 50 tooth axle to get 35-40mph and not sacrifice too much torque but I'm happy with it now. Feels like it could pull a boat lol

Hello and welcome.
Why is it 60-70mph is always the go-to starting speed number?.......
OP by allmeans Im not making fun of you... Im just trying to understand this mentality on a first go, for this speed? ....

Thanx and it’s a 90cc quad and im tryna stick a 420 in It safety is not my main concern....I had a mini bike that did 45 with a 6.5hp Briggs no tc and it did wheelies so to me 60 on a quad dosent sound that unreasonable with a motor that is twice the size but I’m no expert What kind of speed do you guys think I’ll get with a 12 t tc and a 60/70 t sprocket on the axel. thanx every one for the input

Eton 90 if I can’t get it to do at least 45/50 and pick up the tiers it isn’t worth it

You will not want to go that fast on one of those quads. My Yamaha Blaster with its stock gearing is about 40mph and that's plenty freakin fast to get hurt on. I spent $500 for that. I wouldn't waste money, time, and effort on swapping an engine on Chinese ATV, when for the same money, you could buy a quality quad and have something that could potentially be faster and/or better.

40 on that would be so freakin scary and with that motor and a tc I don't think it would be very easy to keep the front wheels down

60 or 70 would be suicidal

I see everyone is talking about the going..... Howabout the stopping......
Is there even brakes on that thing.... If so, itll still need better ones as big as the tires at least....

I appreciate everyone’s concern for my safety I promise I’ll wear a helmet. As for price I got the quad for free motor with tc for free. So the build will cost me the price of the back sprocket. The point of this thing is for it to be s scary. not just something u can have pind all the time. So my goal is be able to handle small hills mild trails Spin tiers get the tiers up and do at least 50 with out frying the tc. possible or not? This thing is No kids allowed

We've already kinda said, it but noo, it's not really gonna happen. It would take something like a 2 stroke bike engine with multiple gears.
And really, a helmet is most certainly not enough!
I know a guy in my church who now has metal parts holding his ankle together because of a motorcycle crash, and I'm pretty sure he was wearing a helmet.
Also, where the heck would you drive it 60-70 mph? An airport!?
No it will not just cost a back sprocket. A TC is great for acceleration, but it's not a miracle device!
And when you say the point of it is to be scary, that IS scary. On a quad, scary oftentimes means VERY DANGEROUS.
Please, just go for tire frying capabilities and don't kill yourself!

I would start with a 10 tooth sprocket off the driven and a 60 tooth on the axle. It will have very snappy acceleration. You may even get away with a 50 tooth on the axle but it wont be as snappy. Good luck and take lots of pictures so we can see how you did it.

I’m pretty sure you’ll be able to get 50 easily. I have a gx160 with a 12:56 on 15 inch tires and that gets me 40 easily. You’re gonna have bigger tires and a much more powerful motor. The issue however is that if you crash you’re gonna be happy you’re alive. I’ve never driven a quad but from what I’ve heard about them, they’re suicide. So good luck and be safe

50 is absolutely possible I have a mini bike with a 290 cc engine tc 54 tooth rear sprocket and 18 inch rear tire 40 chain right now it will do about 55 with incredible acceleration however it is hard on belts not too bad thought

I would do this and see how it goes. You will never reach the speeds you want, but you will probably find that when you feel how sketchy that thing is, you will not want to go any faster on it

It's great on hills pretty good all round gearing I would like more top speed but in the back of my mind always is the tires are snow blower tires and can they stay together at speeds like that

But like I said it is a little hard on belts my engine started as a Kawasaki 9.5 hp governor removed head ported aggressively jetted and straight piped not sure how much hp now but more a belt would last me about three race nights and about 5 or 6 random length road rides but that was crap belts from tractor supply co I'm trying one from gopowersports it's supposed to be better we will see
