Hey guys,

I recently got a Streaker go kart with a Predator 212cc engine. It has 22' tall rear tires on a live axle. I'm trying to get the gear ratio right with a centrifugal clutch. I already bought (before I realized the kart had 22" tires) a front 10 tooth sprocket. With using the online calculator it appears a 8 tooth drive sprocket and a 80 tooth rear sprocket would be good. I can find a rear 80 tooth but cannot find a 8 tooth. I pulled apart the centrifugal clutch I bought hoping I could find somewhere that just sells the 8 tooth sprocket piece. This would be for a #40/#41 chain.

Thanks for your help.

Hi there. You might find i easier if you use a jackshaft. This will allow for compound gearing and the use of smaller sprockets. If you aren't sure what a jackshaft is, just do a quick search on the forum.

Post a few pics of your kart so that we can see what you are working with.

This is the current status of my streaker go kart.

I was really hoping to not have to go jackshaft route. Was thinking the centrifugal clutch to live axle would be easiest. I am correct in aiming for 23mph? Wonder if the 80 tooth on the back would be to big? (hit the ground or not fit in the frame).

Thanks,

I have a streaker with big tires like that...it runs around 26-27 with a governed lifan engine that is worn out. It'll make 37 if I hand bypass the governor. I have a jackshaft run by a bent up 30 series driver pulling a 7 inch Chinese driven clutch. I think that is in turn spinning a 10/80... When I get home from work I will verify that. I personally think you would benefit from spending 50-60 bucks for a cheap eBay 30 series instead of burning up clutches left and right. Your bottom end pull with those big tires and the TC will be a game changer over that clutch...ask me how I know!!!

weird thing is I think this go kart may have come with 13" tires in the rear which would certainly solve my centrifugal clutch issues but then I see other people with Streakers that have 22" tires. Im not sure.

Look at this link:
http://www.gokartsusa.com/browseproducts/Kenbar-S-465-Streaker-Gokart-6hp.HTML

That kart has the same tires front and rear which appear to be about a 13" using my eyeball. :)

I will look into the torque converter and try to figure out how to incorporate it with my setup.

Thanks,

I hate to ask but can you provide links? for the torque converter I should get? Cheapest possible? (i'm trying to be be cheap on this  )
Are all torque converters belt driven or are there chain driven ones?

so im not sure of the exact setup on your end, but often times there is a second motor mount plate that holds the jackshaft. The jackshaft is like a small axle between the engine shaft and the go kart rear axle. The belt goes around the engine output (drive unit) and the jackshaft (driven unit) the jackshaft then uses a chain to go to the rear axle.

If you look at "30 series torque converter" on ebay, that is typically the least expensive.,

Most 30 series torque converters have a back plate that houses the jackshaft. In this case, you may run into alignment issues unless you run the jackshaft's sprocket on the outside of the driven unit. Might flex too much at this point.
